        Are we asterisked for "MLB"?

BTW, that latter no no (a perfect game) was thrown by then father of 7 and future wingnut Senator Jim Bunning.

                No argument from me.

When we finally get a legit one I hope it's Jake or Thor. Santana was a nice guy but he wasn't a Met, he was a rental.

We missed our shot with Seaver to do it right.

Yeah, but wasn't there a bad official scorer call the other way that ruined a no-hitter? The one that John McEnroe called out during his press conference at the US Open.

Not for the Mets there wasn't.

Its hilarious that you guys are reminiscing about Fenway in the 80's. That's when I first started going and your description is spot on.

I do wonder sometimes where all those people have gone, because its a completely different crowd now. Maybe they all just became full time Bruins fans!

                        Not with NHL prices.

The CF bleachers at Fenway was basically Alabama with Dorchester accents. Nobody in the Deep South is worse than those people.

The walkways behind the home plate stands were essential a big urinal -- the bathrooms themselves just had a long trough, and even then the local intelligentsia couldn't be bothered.

There's more white trash in Boston and its environs than on Tobacco Row. Still, Fenway is the greatest place I ever saw baseball.

And as I repeatedly tell you Kep, those people are loooong gone. Even by the time Good Will Hunting came out, Southie was getting turned into a giant upscale condo. I got a big kick out of Mystic River as well. If you can buy a place in Charlestown for under a million bucks god bless ya.

I do remember the troughs though, and as a little kid trying to use those it was interesting to say the least! Like a lot of things Red Sox related, Fenway got immeasurably better when John Henry bought the team and fixed it up.

There's a condo across from Broadway station where Triple O's used to be selling for over a million dollar$. Amrheins(opened in 1890)was just sold. The guy that owns that also owns Mul's Diner across the street, that was just sold.

Well maybe I'll give the city another shot some time. God knows gentrification is one of the godsends of city life. But I had no problem with the black poor in the city (although I've heard JP has also been gussied up). It was blue collar whites who were The Element in Boston and I have a difficult time imagine that rodentia is not still endemic.

To be honest, since about 1965 blue collar whites have basically sucked everywhere. Marx was wrong about them. They're part of the problem.

Whether or not the Twins continue the early season magic they currently warm my heart. The sporting heroes of my youth hold varying levels of sway on my psyche and for different reasons.

-Gophers. When my dad was "absent" for years my best friend's dad had season tickets to Gophers' hockey, football and basketball and at my age it was priceless
-North Stars. Come on. I grew up wanting to play in the NHL and the team was so accessible in those days. Tickets were easy to come by and I was right there for every game during the 81 playoffs.
-Vikings. Red blooded American and they were effing kings. Of course!
-Twins. The Bad News Bears that never ascended but baseball was my best sport and my older brother by 5 years was a bat boy for 3 years (also a ball boy for the Vikings) and even though the Twins were typically awful something resonated for me and my heart was sold.

Gophers hockey is my jam, but there is no comparison to a summer filled with Twins wins and optimism for October.
