    Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Goon (of Goon's World - a blog dedicated to the Fighting Sioux, the WCHA, college hockey and the NHL) has joined up with IC to provide a college perspective. Here is his top 20 pre-season rankings:

1.) Denver University – On paper it would appear that the Denver Pioneers don’t have many real weaknesses offensively, on the blue line the Pioneers are a little young this season. There is a very good possibility that there could be two or three freshman defenseman playing in the top 6 defensive positions from night to night. The Pioneers return — Forwards Rhett Rakhshani (15g-22a-37pts), Joe Colborne (10g-21a-31), and Tyler Ruegsegger (15g-11a-26pts), on defense Patrick Wiercioch (12g-23-35pts) decided to not sign a contract and junior goalie Marc Cheverie (23-12-5, 2.34 GAA and .921 SV %) is a very serviceable goaltender and with a younger defensive core he will be tested. The Pioneers lose forward Tyler Bozak (8g-15a-23pts), defensemen Patrick Mullen (4g-21a-25pts), and J.P. Testwuide (3g-10a-13pts). Will be the odds on favorite to finish first in the WCHA.

2.) Miami University - Looking at Miami University’s 2009-2010 roster it would appear that the RedHawks are going to be well balanced team and could make another run to the Frozen Four, I don’t think it is a stretch so that say that RedHawks have a legitimate shot at an NCAA title. Miami’s biggest departures are forward Justin Mercier (14g-15-29pts) and defenseman Kevin Roeder (2g-4a-6pts). The 64,000.00 question; will be any lingering affects of the alleged choke job in the final minutes of the third period of the championship game?

    ALLEGED choke job for Miami?

It was a monumental choke job. Let's not act like it didn't happen.

Likewise for "Denver University"....it's the University of Denver, but uses the Big 12 way of identifying itself, DU (Like CU, KU, OU, etc.).

    Couple of corrections/additions:
    1. As noted before, it is the University of Denver
    2. Returning forwards: Add leading scorer, Anthony Maiani (11g-30a-41) and Luke Salazar (15g-10a-25)
3 Incoming freshmen: Gold medal winners William Wrenn-D, Drew Shore-F and Adam Murray-G as well as WJC prospect, Matt Donovan-D

With all the fire power UND has coming back, that little write up should have them at number 1.

    what an ironic statement.

    --
Cornell is low b/c really, they're not that good outside of the ECAC league (I have seen them play and that is my observation).
Everyone knows Denver is loaded so there's no need to list EVERY SINGLE high scoring forward they have returning, nor is it necessary to list EVERY SINGLE talented incoming freshman. I'm sure a select few were picked.
Vermont University is a common mistake. So is Denver since they are DU it confuses people.

They also don't lose any major pieces after coming off an "elite 8" performance last year. They have a tougher non-conference schedule this year, though (with BU at MSG, CC in Florida, @UNH, and NoDak 2x at home), so their record may not be as good this year, but I think they'll be better than last year, not worse.
If you don't change the world today, how can it be any better tomorrow?

Want to make a side bet? I think the Big Red play and I would say that they are ranked about right. I saw them play in person and I wasn't that impressed with them especially with watching WCHA teams on a week to week basis. If they played in the WCHA or Hockey East they would be a middle of the road team.

    Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Cornell is one of the most (if not THE most) overrated programs in the last decade in all of college hockey. It's nice to see a fan of the program get excited about bringing back a team that was in the elite eight by beating powerhouse Northeastern in the first round of the tournament (NU, if you were paying attention, choked at everyone turn of the season last year with something big on the line). But that's like a Merrimack fan saying, "we were only two wins away from the Frozen Four..."

Cornell also returns a lot of players from a team that lost to Bemidji last year.

See, now there goes the reason for optimism.

    Game over.
