Those companies sell their supplies on the open market. A US* company has nothing to do with the citizens of the United States. Unless when you say "we" you mean Exxon. In that case, yes, "we" have energy independence.

I'm not sure if it's still true but there was a time when Alaskan oil went to Japan while we bought from the Middle East. Oil doesn't give a sh-t where it's from.

    * And in any case these are multinationals.

any disruption, or threat of disruption, to oil supply in the middle east would absolutely harm the US consumers with respect to the price of oil. Oil is a global commodity.

Exactly. If Middle East exploded into active war such that their oil production was eliminated, the global price of oil would skyrocket. Under those conditions, I strongly doubt American oil companies would say, “well, we’re not affected, and it only costs us $35 per barrel in extraction cost, so out of the goodness of our hearts and our patriotism, we’re just going to keep selling to American consumers and businesses at $80 per barrel, even though we could get $200 per barrel in the foreign market.” Nope, not happening. Therefore, the only way to ensure that cheap gas is available in the US is to make sure that the taps keep flowing in the Middle East.

Not to mention that keeping the region on the edge of war perpetually is lucrative for... other industries.

    Rut roh.

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey could shut down its Incirlik air base, which hosts U.S. nuclear warheads, in response to threats of U.S. sanctions and a separate U.S. Senate resolution that recognized mass killings of Armenians a century ago as genocide, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday.

“If it is necessary for us to take such a step, of course we have the authority ... If this is necessary, together with our delegations, we will close down Incirlik if necessary,” Erdogan said on A Haber TV.

Turkey can also close down the Kurecik radar base if necessary, he added. “If they are threatening us with the implementation of these sanctions, of course we will be retaliating,” he said.

Turkey condemned the U.S. Senate measure last week. Erdogan suggested on Sunday that Turkey could also respond with parliamentary resolutions recognizing the killings of indigenous Americans in past centuries as genocide.
