Hoping for 5 wins this season. Would be nice if we could grab one this weekend. IMO We made lots of progress last week in bringing up the puck up and out of the zone. We showed some very good speed in doing so. We need work in getting the defense involved in the scoring. A shot from the point by our defensemen should have our three forwards (1) screen the shot (2) redirecting the shot or (3) picking up rebounds and blasting away. This is what St. Lawrence was doing with a clearly more experienced team. On two occasions our forwards actually blocked the defensemen's shots rather than step aside at the last second. We are also running out of gas in period 3. In overtime the St. Lawrence skater beat our skater to the puck and made the pass that got the score. We were outstanding in period 1. Got to do it for 3 periods.

I don't think you are supposed to do a line change when the puck is in your own end .... not smart ...

Agree, it was an unusual line change leading to the second Q'pac goal--although I'd say the puck was in the neutral zone.
The Union Defensemen looked very lonely as the play developed.

Isn't U taking a lot of penalties for too many men on the ice this year--including the one that set up the first Q'pac goal?

Unfortunately, U has a low scoring team that can't afford mistakes.

Union defeated RPI in Football, for the Dutchman Shoes Trophy and a perfect 10-0 season. On to the first round of the NCAA DIII tournament where I believe they will host ? in Schenectady. They are going into the tournament with very strong defensive play.

Anyone else kind of troubled by this quote from Union President David Harris?

“We have to tell our story better: Union College is an amazing institution but too many people know about us, didn't you guys win this national championship in hockey,” he said. “I don't want to reduce the number of hockey mentions, I want to increase other mentions.”
He may not want to decrease the hockey mentions but it doesn't seem like he wants to make hockey a bigger priority going forward either.

He may not be another Stephen Ainley; will he turn out to be another Roger Hull?

Sounds like he just doesn't want to be Q. Good.

[QUOTE=ecachawkeyfan;6866926]Anyone else kind of troubled by this quote from Union President David Harris?

                      Yes.

Sounds like he is stepping in it again. Last time it was his desire to do away with free speech because it might offend someone. That caused one of my classmates to withhold his $25,000 yearly contribution. Hard to convince a baby boomer and war protester that free speech is bad if it upsets a snowflake's feelings. How about 58,000 of your generation coming home in body bags.

Harris painted his fingernails in solidarity. Great. Meanwhile, the best minds at HBS are fortelling a time when 3/4 of today's colleges will no longer be in existence. One would hope Harris's focus would be on more strategic issues. What steps should we be taking now to ensure survival?

The only way we can compete in DI hockey, given that we do not offer scholarships and do not have the name recognition or academic attraction of the ivy's, is to make sure that the entire ecosystem is aligned in support of the hockey program. That means the faculty, the students, the local fans, the alumni, the parents, the athletic department, the president, etc. If Harris does not want to support the program the same way that Stephen Ainley did, then you can kiss future winning seasons goodbye. Lots of seats will go empty like Clarkson/St Lawrence. Less money for other athletic programs and pressure to return to D-III.

Back in the 1950s and 1960's Union was second tier academically when it had 600 students (all boys). Its strength was pre-med and engineering and especially electrical engineering as Steinmetz was on the EE faculty. Its been drifting downward since as its hard to attract the best and brightest when your home is Schenectady, NY. This also applies to RPI which was considered one of the top engineers schools in the country back then.

David Harris comes from Cornell and Tufts University. These schools and their environments are very far removed from any notion of real world reality. Schenectady is not Ithaca or Cambridge/Somerville. Think more working class.

I think the jury is still out on Harris. If he turns out he is another Rogar Hull, it will be a disaster for the program and the school.

David Harris is no Roger Hull...thank God, but, doubtless, he is a liberal whose signature remains to be seen. One can guess. With the college professing to provide full financial aid, one wonders how an endowment of paltry dimensions is able to fund that promise. The diversity obsession on every campus has become cloying, but with Harris helming the Union ship, his charge should be first and foremost to tap more effectively the alums whom the college trumpets for their conspicuous success. The endowment is an embarrassment, particularly with Goldman types on the board. Its performance during the greatest bull market in history is absolutely pitiful. Why, it was even down 10% a few years ago! Union's so called peer schools have left it in the dust. That the endowment is not flirting with a billion by now is inexcusable.
Hockey is a prime mover in enhancing the college's profile. Harris should not diminish that. A new rink is imperative. Without it, it would not be surprising to see the DI program begin to slide as prospective recruits weigh Achilles against newer or refurbished facilities. Rick Bennett has already been a candidate at BU. A return to NESCAC, if Union would be welcome, would then enter into the conversation. Maybe that's not so bad. The glow of the national championship seems to have faded somewhat. It is all about money. Union needs more; lots more.
Dutchman, you should check your facts. Steinmetz was at Union from 1902-1923. During the sixties when enrollment was around 1300, Union's academic reputation was unquestioned, as it is today. Engineering has always been prominent but the liberal arts were and are as good as any in the country.

In looking at the NCAA DIII football tournament, if we can get by Case Western on Saturday, I think we have a good shot at getting to, at least, the semi-final round.

Wow - this is somewhat of a bombshell. Sam Morton and Lucas Breault reportedly on the way out.

Morton had played in 13 of 14 games, Breault 12 of 14. Playing time wouldn't seem to be a concern.

I can think of Kevin Shier (2014) and Trevor Mingoia (2011) leaving during the season but that's it in recent memory unless I'm forgetting someone.
