That's not quite fair.
The herd instinct is "inside group good; outside group bad." It's rooting for your team (nation, race, religion, whatever) by reflex.
Therefore the first grade in learning to think critically is to take claims of uniqueness , good or bad, and submit them to criticism. That develops into a critical instinct and it's a good one.
But the lazy and fatalist simply substitute "everything's the same" for rigorous analysis.
Therefore the second grade in learning to think critically is to evaluate context and experience and be willing to make commitments to evaluations. Bad guys depend on people not taking this second step. It's how they hide behind false equivalency, bothsiderism, and whataboutism.
The fact that we have cognitive biases we need to watch does not obviate the fact that sometimes there really are monsters.
