Seems the CBSN feed is done for now. It started to stream the moonwalk segment a little early.

    Re: Apollo 11 - 50 years on.

So on launch day a few days back, NASA TV had Michael Collins doing an interview out near the pads, and they were having him discuss the prep, the launch, the joke the quarantine system was, and then they asked the question that Mike *always* gets asked: How was it being the loneliest man in the galaxy flying alone on the backside of the moon?

I found his response honest: 'I was happy to be alone on the back side of the Moon. It was 40 minutes of radio silence from Mission Control where they weren't chatting in my ear making me do things. It was only 40 minutes because radio waves sort of bent around the moon, so even though I lost sight of the Earth, I could still hear them.'

    Re: Apollo 11 - 50 years on.

Here's a nice breakdown of the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) with a good discussion and examples of how the code worked.

There are three syntactical elements to interacting with the computer via DSKY (display and keyboard):

PROGRAM -- discrete programs used for different phases of the mission
VERB -- action to be taken
NOUN -- target for the action

So for instance, P64 is program 64, which runs during the LM approach to the moon.

When you hear the astronauts say "poo" they are referring to P00 -- program zero zero, which is merely an idle state.

VERB and NOUN are just what you think: an action (e..g, "display as digital representation") and a target (e.g., ∆v).

I wonder how much sweat was emited in that room (and in the capsule).

Though it's a good question why we haven't been to the moon since.

I told my mom what I was watching and asked why she wasn't.

    Re: Apollo 11 - 50 years on.

So it looks like the CBSN YouTube video from earlier is NOT live streaming the walk synced to historical time. They apparently aired it directly after the sync'd lunar landing earlier this afternoon. For those who want to watch it, it is archived: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBdyzTvA3oA

BBC America seems to be broadcasting their version of the space walk, and it appears to be the CBS Walter Cronkite feed.

Cronkite didn't get the phrase. Granted, Armstrong f-cked it up, which is too bad, because it was a great line.

Even knowing "how it ends," and seeing this footage so many times over the years, this is still something special to see, especially watching on the Apollo in real time website.

Mission Control is so calm in the footage on the site, that they DID make a trip to the moon as exciting as a trip to Pittsburgh.

I love the guy (maybe the INCO?) who's smoking through this and blowing smoke in the Control Room.

He's only been out there for a few minutes and his oxy is down to 80%. I guess they didn't take long shifts at all.
