OK so they are actually a different thing, then? It sounds like they would be tougher like some of those tough grained rices people torment themselves with to feel heathier.

I think I'll stay processed and lazy on this one. Pick your battles.

With alcohol, I cut back on consumption, and then switched to either pickled vegetables or popcorn as a snack to go with the wine.

Can't be too hard if that's your common routine in the morning, the same as my mom.

Yeah, but some of us don’t have 30 minutes to prepare breakfast. Whether it’s in the morning or the night before. I suppose you could theoretically do them in a slow cooker like Alton, but that’s still a lot of effort relative to nuking it.

If you're talking my oatmeal “recipe” that’s just 45 seconds of prep and a minute in the microwave.

Going to expand my lists to the full day of meals since that makes more sense:

Yup. I don't intend to do that every day, it just kinda happened.

Today I am at 730 but I have dinner to go so I will be around 1300 for the day.

Recommendation is 2000 for inactive men my age and my goal is to average right around it. Portion control is one thing. I'm also cutting down to just water, 1% milk, and tea as fluids (I hate coffee). I can't prove Diet Dr. Pepper is f-cking me up, but meh, adapt to water and I won't miss it, same as when I dropped non-diet soda.

The other thing I'm doing is starting, gingerly, to exercise. I hope going from zero to something (biking, light yard work) will make me feel better and help me.

Lady friend started the keto diet. Lost 4 lbs in 2 weeks. May not sound like a lot but it was just from changing eating habits.

Gained 20 pounds since my surgery. Combination of inactivity and and general apathy will do that to you. And I noticed I always did better nutrition wise if I had an endurance event to train for, and multiple races each year pretty much keeps me on the path. Even thought I have no upcoming marathons or triathlons in the next few months, I do have a few things: a full recovery, feeling good about myself, and getting my life back.

With that in mind, I re-committed to workout planning and meal planning, because I find myself eating better if the day's meals and workout are planned out. Lots of quality protein, fiber, and water, black coffee, and tea. And if I stay with this, I have a hunch I'll stop feeling like sh-t pretty soon.

At least the good news is I am now cleared for the elliptical, swimming, and stationary bicycle. And once I get moving in full (along with laying off the baked goods), I should be okay.

Also, never lose your fitness. It's a tough road trying to get it back.

Since I'm sure you were all desperate for an update, I finally found what is for me a workable solution to having healthy food intake. For lunch now I have Wegman's salad kits, and for dinners Dr. Mrs. and I eat Freshly prepared meals. This (and going full time to diet soda) has been successful enough that's I've lost 10 pounds over the month having lost 5 before, have decreased my weight volatility to almost nothing -- there are no longer any spikes -- and over the same interval completely stabilized my blood pressure to the 110s. I am still aiming for 30+ more pounds of weight loss but now I have a trajectory.

For whatever physiological reason I was not able to do this on my own, I needed and adopted guardrails, and they work for me.

Anybody fighting the same thing, good luck to you, you have my complete support and respect. It sucks, it's boring, it's embarrassing, but it's important and you can do it.
