    From Wikipedia:

The cathedral suffered fourteen hits by aerial bombs during World War II. Badly damaged, it nevertheless remained standing in an otherwise completely flattened city. The twin spires were an easily recognizable navigational landmark for Allied aircraft bombing.

On March 6, 1945, an area West of the cathedral (Marzellenstrasse/Trankgasse) was the site of intense tank combat between American tanks of the 3rd Armored Division and a Panther Ausf. A of Panzer brigade 106 Feldherrnhalle. The Panther successfully knocked out a Sherman killing three men before it was destroyed by a T26E3 Pershing hours later. Footage of that battle survives. The destroyed Panther was later put on display at the base of the cathedral for the remainder of the war in Europe.[13]

    Repairs were completed in 1956.

No, I don't blame them. I think it's a commentary on how sad this is and a tremendous loss for the French people.

Not only the French people, but Christianity as a whole. Especially during the atonement period of Holy Week.

No, you were right. There was significant damage and they did have to do a huge restoration.

All people. That cathedral means more to this old atheist than to most Christians and even most Catholics.

Based on new construction, I shudder to see what may replace Her. I don't think they'll be able to do a 100% restoration, but please don't make the new cathedral look like a Marriott.

Ah sorry, I read that as not significant.

I saw the cologne cathedral in 2002 and it all looked like one big old historic place.

So did Munich. AFAIK, Bamberg is original, and has the only Papal grave in Germany. It's plausible Clement II was poisoned to death by a rival based on the lead content of his bones. Dude only lasted about 9 months!

From BBC: The Notre Dame spire was actually itself a restoration, dating from "only" 1856. The restorer flanked it with statues of the apostles and represented himself as Doubting Thomas. He stood with his back to Paris because he hated the architectural style being used for new buildings in his time.

Munich is interesting. It looks like it's halfway between Romanesque and Gothic:

It sounds like Allied bombing gutted the interior.

Really. It's a very important building to me and to many people who value high culture.

At the end of the day, humans have done, like, twelve things that have ennobled the species. Going to the moon is the big one. Greek philosophy is one of them. And Gothic cathedrals are one of them.

Chartres is the queen, but Notre Dame is a very important one as well, not to mention the rest of its historical significance. This is like losing the Colosseum and St. Peter's in one shot.

You know most of the famous/old cathedrals were built on the backs of slave labor, right? #DevilsAdvocate

                                F-ck yes!

But actually, no. I mean insofar as there is any "free labor" in a Feudal economy, the cathedrals were typically the product of immense, hysterical civic boosterism. There are lots of well-documented accounts about people willingly giving up their time, money, and labor to build them. All you had to do was hint that it was more of a Shelbyville idea and you were on your way. Aristocratic ladies dragging heavy stones to the masons, that kind of thing. An explosion of ecstatic faith like the early crusades. And when Marxist historians dug into it in the early 20th C to debunk it their conclusion was, "huh, whaddy know? It looks like it was actually true!"
