You said that few US churches charge admission, and the reason is that few are tourist destinations.

US churches don't charge for admittance, and they all have private insurance. All moneys taken in are strictly through donations of their parishioners and visitors.

They also aren't owned by the state. In France Cathedrals built before 1905, when their separation of church and state law was passed, remained property of the state (church and chapel building ownership was transferred to their parish).

The state has far more resources than any private insurance company. Does the U.S. government have fire insurance on the Pentagon?

I understand that completely, but was responding to mookie with what I said because mookie seemed to be tying together direct revenue via admission charges with private insurance needs/use.

                No
Mookie.commented yesterday that there was no coverage as it was owned by the state with reason state had deeper pockets than any insurers (as heard on BBC which prompted statement) [pretty much your post here]
Priceless.then came and shared how they can't charge admission. Whatever. As if they would charge admission and then use that to buy insurance. Who knows.

US churches have insurance and don't charge admission (reiterated by cloud). Alfa decided to pipe up and share no US churches are the equiv of ND... why mookie doesn't know. That didn't add to anything on how US churches have insurance.
                Now mookie's head just hurts....

The post I was replying to was about US churches not charging admission like ND doesn't. My point was that no church in the US could even think about charging, since so few tourists go there. Making that comparison isn't exactly the same. Which makes the insurance comparison between the US and old French churches not the same, too. ND was a tourist destination back in 1905 for many hundreds of years- so at that time, it made the most sense to have the French government insure it.

Because wood fires burn at ~600° C and the melting point of gold is 1064° C.

                      Next?

If people want to get inspiration from that, nothing wrong with that.

But the other issue with the data- the fire never got to the cross, as that part of the church did not collapse. So there was no fire to even try to melt the gold.

Probably the fact the cathedral caught fire in the first place.

I'm not thrilled that Sniffles is pledging my tax dollars to helping restore a church in another country. Maybe help rebuild Puerto Rico or get Flint some water.
