I recall troughs in the mens room in Yankee Stadium 1.0 (late 60s, early 70s). I miss that ballpark.

As a lifelong diehard Red Sox fan, I like Fenway, but there is only so much lipstick you can stick on a pig before people realize it's a pig.

However, it will be a political decision to replace Fenway. I don't think John Henry has enough money to bribe both City Hall AND the State House.

I'm terrified they've ruined it. I loved how sh-tty it was.

Put it this way: I prefer Shea to Citi.

Fenway will be there for another 50 years, or until whenever the building is no longer structurally sound. There's really no open land available to put it in the city anymore that isn't already spoken for (housing and labs/offices). There's also the added revenue of having concerts and other sporting events there that wouldn't be booked in a generic new facility.

Oddly enough Fenway was always the smallest park in the league but now the new ones tend to be built at about 40K capacity, which is what Henry and crew have brought Fenway up to in recent years.

Well, the seats are still small and cramped. My seats are blue painted wood. Very uncomfortable. So very many ads have covered the place - sponsors cover the Green Monster and really, almost everywhere you looked has an ad or logo. But I do think they've retained a lot of the charm even with finding new ways to open up the area. You can now walk all around the park. You used to not be able to walk to the bleachers from the Grandstand. Now it's a huge open area called The Big Concourse. I tend not to go there very often as it's a long walk from my seats. They close off Jersey Street on game day and consider it part of the park so during the game, you can go outside for food and drink or head over to Twins for souvenirs. I thought that was a great idea.

I am not a Pink Hat and am not a fan of them. So many tend to get peppered through the stands. And then there's the super townie-type of fans. Can't stand them either. I go to watch a game. The constant getting up and down for beers or food while a pitch us about to be thrown annoy the ever loving **** out of me. Tuesday night, a hot chocolate vendor sold to the guy sitting a little further down in my row and he did it from the empty seat in front of me. I was like "Um, hello. You're IN MY WAY!"

              Good God, what?!

At least Fenway has character, which is why I can understand people still love it even though it is waaaay past it's sell by date.

But Shea never had character. Ever. It was just another one of those horrible, horrid, pathetic, putrid cookie-cutter multi-purpose stadiums that blighted the sports architecture landscape of the 70s which needed to be replaced the day it opened.

My very point. Although Shea lacked any individuality I still prefer it to the forced faux-nostalgic Citi. What the Disney parks are doing is faking character by prefabbing it. It's not real; it's just the apotheosis of marketing. It's faked nostalgia. There was a reason to have parks built in such weird shapes in the early 20th century -- they were jamming them into rectangular city blocks. Now it's just using that as a cheap motif to call up a certain (again, fake) emotional response.

                It's the difference between this:

I used to like that big scrap metal place across the street from the parking lot at Shea. Nothing screamed out "ambiance" quite like that.

A lot of that stuff is still there -- there's a murderer's row (literally) of Mexican and mob auto body shops. Bulldozing it was part of a whole other Wilpon land grab that's been stuck in local government bribery hell for a decade.

Oh, I got why you don't like Citi even before you explained it. But that doesn't mean you can't hate Shea also.

If you're scoring at home it turns out the Mets offensive ineptitude is stronger kung fu than the Natinals bullpen incompetence, but only by the slimmest possible margin.

We lived in North Jersey and Dad's office had season tickets to the Yankees, so most of my youth MLB experience was at YS 1.0. Shea was nice, but compared to the original Yankee Stadium, there is no comparison.
