Whew....A's win a tight one and take 3 of 4 in Houston after getting clobbered 15-0 in the first game. on paper, should be smooth sailing to the end, none of our remaining schedule is over .500.

        Just about sums it up.
Alonso will win it when he hits 74.

McNeil will win it when he hits .400.

Over at Deadspin (yes, I know) a Commenter came up with a totally bizarre suggestion that I love the more I think about it.

          A homerun ends an inning.

Give it a day to swirl around in your head. Trust me.

ya no. I can't see any positives. Unless you are just against HRs.

So you also want to ban shifts. As this is essentially the same type of rules interference.

I understand that rules by definition interfere with games. But this is an extreme case of it.

Eliminating HR like that would alter the game too much IMO.

Has any rule change altered the fundamental nature of a sport to this degree (eliminating 40-60% of scoring opportunity in this case)? Only thing I can equate is the shot clock in basketball, but that didn't alter how teams were putting the ball in the hoop per se, just how often that needed to happen...

I think shifts are hilarious. I'd never ban them.

Obviously I think this as a rule change would create a new sport -- it wouldn't be baseball anymore. The DH meant the AL no longer plays baseball. So I am not a serious advocate. But I love it as a thought exercise.

One tweak: inside-the-park homeruns permit the inning to continue.

Ummm, a HR ends the inning, or the half inning? If the former the visiting team could homer every inning and the home team would never get an at bat. I bet that would be good for attendance.

                                Half innings, obvs.

Imagine instructing guys on launch angle and bat speed to maximize gappers, doubles, low liners. But homeruns would also become more attractive late in close games, and of course in extra innings. I love the strategic element of this. A pitcher with a big lead can also just toss a lollipop in there -- very hard to place it for a double (it will hang up) and if it leaves the park big deal.

As big swings are less incentified, walks and strike outs decrease. Small ball and speed make a comeback, since that's what gives you big innings with crooked numbers.
