However, let's also remember that we are in the middle of a culture change, and one of the old cultures was, "X takes the shot," where X was usually either on the point or on the PP umbrella. The defence was ready for it, and almost always had a blocking forward. All you had to do was figure out who it was that year, and you were set. Perhaps in the future we'll be able to use it effectively and sort of "mix up" the weapons we have, but until that time, let's impress that there's more ways to win than to snipe from the point and hope to hell you hit the net, which we had a lot of trouble doing this year.

One thing I did like is that we had a number of goals on the rebound. The centre crashing the net really did help, and you knew something good was going to happen when he went in front of the net. Sure, we had a couple wave-offs on crease violations, and sometimes the goalie will just swallow up the puck. One of those is going to happen, and obviously the other you can do something about.

I'd say the next thing we work on is movement. We were giving the defence all day to set up, and is probably why we had so few goals. Cross that bridge, and we're going to see a lot of good improvement next year.
FD, when I say sniper I mean a natural goal scorer. Not someone who needs to stand in one spot a shoot a one timer. I want a player that can score from anywhere. And who will score when he has an open shot, instead of missing the net.
That's the guy I am looking for.

OK, fair enough. We definitely need to start hitting the net.

Just out of curiosity, is it something you see in Zieky, or just not quite there? I know he's only around one more year, but at least in the short term...

Zieky seems like he is a natural scorer to me. We only have him for one more year, but for next year, we have him

Now let me preface this by saying I like Zieky and what he brings. But I wouldn’t call him a natural goal scorer. If he was then why did he only play in 8 games in 2 years at Providence and register just 1 assist. Did Leamen miss something? I mean the man only built Union and Providence, two programs that won National titles. Although Bennet was at the helm of Union when they won but it was his recruits.

Just not a big enough sample size at RPI. He did not get much of a chance at Providence, so I will wait and see.
With Zieky and Hayhurst, we have two decent scorers, but we don't have anyone that makes the opponents focus on giving them some extra room. That would open up the offense for everyone.
I have high hopes for Hallbauer, but if the team just watches him skate around like they did with Props, his talents will go to waste.
He will create space, but the team has to react and not just watch.

That makes sense, and also speaks to the culture I mentioned around the time Hayhurst came back. Sure, there were a number of people that interpreted the argument as "Hayhurst sucks" (despite making perfectly clear that that wasn't the point), but they were mistaken in the true meaning of the message, which is exactly what you have described. I know you probably disagree with the nickname that I had given it because of the meaning when politically applied, but it's the only explanation I really see as to what's going on. If Hayhurst, or Praps, or Hallbauer, or any other "sniper" or "natural goal scorer" that comes along are there, the others likely feel that said person will make the contributions so they don't have to put in as much of an effort. Zieky does not succumb to this temptation, and is therefore able to find success. As for the others, well, maybe they do, especially when we found out, during Hayhurst's injury, that everyone else stepped up and the team went on a tear.

The question for Coach Smith is: How does he get the team to understand that everyone must contribute or the team is doomed? Is that what Adessa installed by being a disciplinarian? Is that maybe where Appert failed, given his national, i.e. "all-star", experience? It's obvious Smith has that concept in mind, but now comes the time for execution, as the year of reckoning looms ahead.

If we are talking about RPI hockey, I only see a community that wants the best for the team. No politics at all.
We need a player that will make space for the others on the team, to get the most and best scoring opportunities.
As for my politics, I will explain once and never mention politics again on this board.
I'm a registered independent. I see good and bad in both parties and will not follow either party line. I will make up mind own mind as to what I want in a representative based on my own values.

Had nothing to do with politics, at least not directly. The nickname I had given was "Socialism in Sports". But I digress.

A player can make space until the cows come home, but unless the other players are going to do something about that space, then any sort of generation will be easily defended.

In my opinion, more wins than losses (whether in league or across the board), along with significant progress in remedying the maladies we have seen and discussed in the past year. The latter is much more important than the former. We showed this year we have the ability to do it, now we need to do it on a somewhat consistent basis.

Then write it off and do some sacking now, because that's never going to happen. Especially around Freakout and playoffs.
