Originally posted by Chuck Murray View PostBarring some amazing developments down the stretch, it's hard to see any of UVM, UConn or Merrimack getting back into playoff contention. UVM probably is the most likely of the group to prove otherwise, but you get the sense they started their push a week or two too late. As long as Luce ends up on the bottom of the pile, all is fine in the WIS world.
From UNH's standpoint, the only team I do NOT want to see them facing in the QF round is UMass Lowell. UMass Amherst is not a program with any real tourney experience, and BC (currently 3rd) seems particularly ripe for a first round upset, while most of the others are struggling to find consistent form (ditto UNH these last few weekends, too). UNH should enter the HE tourney with zero pressure, and a steady diet of postseason style, grind-it-out hockey over their last 5 RS games, so they should be ready, and could be poised to surprise someone.
But a series in Lowell? As a long-standing Bazin Believer, I say ABUML ...
UMA is 12 - 1 at home (loss to UML), will be tough to beat twice in Amherst. The Garden will be a different story.
UNH is likely finishing 7th or 8th, playing one of the MA state schools in round one. Selfishly, I hope we travel to Lowell. Tsongas is close to Manch and a fun place to watch a game.I will not be out cheered in my own building.

Peter Kostis just gave props to UNH during the Pebble Beach tournament on CBS. He mentioned two other people that went to UNH but I didnt catch who they are.
Kostis went to UNH on a football scholarship.Last edited by e.cat; 02-10-2019, 03:30 PM.UNH Hockey: You can check out any time you like but you can never leave!

Originally posted by Greg Ambrose View PostThe argument has been made for years. Back in the nineties and early aughts Minnesota was a force. You might remember that they won back to back national championships, one against UNH. In all those years they played on the Olympic sheet at Mariucci Arena. Now they are mediocre, playing .500 hockey at best. What changed? UNH is no different. They had a huge advantage 20 years ago when playing at home, winning over 80% of their games at the Whit. Now for the past half dozen years they have not. What changed? I’ll await your answer.
Regardless of what we think about the effect (or non-effect) of a larger ice surface, we can probably agree that the ultimate difference ("What changed?") is quality of players (read: recruiting), which, effectively, is coaching since coaches recruit.
I'm not arguing the "excuse" narrative around the sheet size -- we've killed that topic. My opinion is that--specifically as it applies to an effective D-zone breakout--the additional space provides for more time and options. Thus, UNH should have an easier time at home than away (which from observers appears to be true), assuming they are "coached" in the options, which is YOUR point. I get it. Your turn...Shrink-The-Rink, Win a Title

By "on-ice-coaching" strategies, I mean trying to move the puck up ice along the boards, where I watched our forwards constantly get stapled to the boards as they coughed up the puck to the UVM defensemen. I have already railed enough about forfeiting the 5 on 3 PP by planting two forwards behind the opposing net.
