You have to figure given these are 14-18 year olds, and with most kids coming in around 19 or 20 unless they're really something special in which case get them in as soon as you can, it'd probably be 2021 that would fill in a bit. So maybe not the highest of priority, but you never know.

I believe Jewell was on the road this past weekend, so the staff is hard at it.

Seems like a nice pickup. Stats look like he's currently about 5'11 170 ish....with plenty of time to fill out. Left hand shot. Attends science HS in CHI, so he ought to be fine with the school work.

I am concerned about the 3.25* rating by Neutral Zone, but it could improve or they could be wrong. Only about 10% at that level end up at D-I schools. Then again, Savory was also a 3.25.

He’s from 2022? How did RPI professors invent a time machine and there was nothing on the news about it?

I'm not too worried about it and I don't think I'd be too excited if they gave him a 4.0. He won't even celebrate his 16th birthday for another 3 weeks. The best NHL scouts drafting 18 year olds have mixed results. Recruiting 15 years olds will have even more variability. We have to have faith in our coaches and hope he develops as they project. I like how some of Smith's early recruits (Fontaine, Sarlo, Beaton, etc.) are developing. Perhaps he has a good eye for potential.

P.S. Not only did the NZ scouts underestimate Savory, but he was also much older and more developed at the time. Savory's junior coach said he was the best junior goalie in Canada. While that was probably part hometown hyperbole for a guy that was still playing Junior B, it was probably a better assessment than NZ's, which I suspect was based as much on the level he was playing as his actual play.

rpi82, I agree with all of that, spot on. Like Ralph, I also use NZ and do like it a lot. But I don’t take what they have in there as gospel, they watch literally 1000’s of kids, they can’t rate them all accurately. Also, I believe the ratings are more right now, they aren’t projecting. I will say if they’re a 4 or higher I assume they must be good, but not beingthat doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not good recruits.

Most importantly, based on our small sample size, I feel Smith and his staff know what they’re looking for, and are doing an overall good job at recruiting.

I agree that NZ is not the end all. It does give interesting information if taken with a grain of salt.
