      True To The Game:

A big time Philly drug dealer falls for a college student. He is trying to retire from the game, but his life still spills over into her life.

It's okay. You can tell it's some raw actors, and the script needs to be polished a little (as far as dialogue and such). Forgivable, for sure. If this movie was given to higher tier actors/directors...I think it would have been a gem. Not Oscar worthy, don't get me wrong, but much better than what was shown. The main actors definitely have the talent. They just need a little direction.

For untouchable remakes, straight up? Gone With The Wind, Freaks, The Godfather, Das Boot, even some modern movies like There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men. The "based on true story"/etc movies like Shindler's List would be up there, but that's cheating.
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

Theoretically you could remake anything. It's probably just not a good idea when a performance has eclipsed the movie itself. It would be bad taste to remake The Wizard of Oz. That b-tch is Dorothy, the end.

But there's material that's safe no matter how good a performance is. Nobody's going to top Olivier's Hamlet but every generation should take a crack at it. Nor is it just the classics: everybody should do Dracula and Frankenstein. In those cases the text is well established before the movie is made -- the first version is itself a "remake." But that should be true of Oz, too.

Not sure what the decision rule is for leaving the definitive version alone. Movies aren't entirely unlike theater: they are a living art form in some ways.

Gone with the Wind could easily be remade an hour shorter without missing any key parts of the plot.

Hell, Carol Burnett did it in 20 minutes.

I didn't see it, was it a straight remake? Wicked is fantastic and doesn't tread anywhere near Oz.

Maybe the thing is there are sacred characters who it is not wise to try to redo unless it's satire. I would say these include Garland's Dorothy, Leigh's Scarlet, and Bogart's Rick. Gable's Rhett is up there, too. And it works for silly stuff, too. Only Sly can be Rocky. Only Walken can be... well, anything Walken has ever done.

My advice would be do it if you must but be prepared for a Viking funeral while still alive.

Tin Man was not a straight remake. It focused on the Tin Man (surprise!) and he was a cop. The main heft of the story shakes out similar to Oz, but it's still quite different. Zooey Deschanel was Dorothy.

Hmm. I'm not sure I want to see a Dorothy that I want to do. That seems like seriously bad artistic karma.

The movie is a number of years old, and I don't think she was a household name at the time, just a rising star then.

I know that the movie has some people that aren't fans and believe that it shouldn't be on the pedestal it's placed upon, but I got to put CITIZEN KANE on that list.... Orson Welles did it right the first time and there is no "improving" it....

I just saw that she was Trillian in the movie version of Hitchhiker's Guide. I can't believe I didn't remember that.

That was "Orson Welles as Orson Welles as Charles Foster Kane." There's no way to do that without him. Do you want to see somebody else play Clubber Lang?
