Tommies played that period like they lost their POY goalie or something

Hamline beats a Torpy-less St. Thomas. Plattsburgh vs Hamline in the final. Both teams looked strong today and it should be a great game.

St. Thomas and Adrian will face off in the 3rd Place Game

Word at the game was ACL in practice on Thursday(?), she was dressed but did not seem to be moving well when skating on and off the ice but I did not see warm ups so I am not sure if she was able to try playing or not. But as for the game if you were a Hamline fan it would have been great. Hamline controlled play in the first with two goals and their goalie took over from there making a number of very tough saves in the second and third periods. UST not having their POY in goal was not the difference tonight, I am not aware she ever scored a goal and UST needed goals scored tonight. Unfortunate for her as a senior. On the other hand the two players that transferred from UST to Hamline two seasons ago now have a chance tomorrow at a National Championship.

Just stating the facts. And the University of St. Thomas is doing a great job hosting. Also, congrats to out going St. Thomas AD Steve Fritz for a great job and long career, enjoy retirement.

                  • So did Hamline get their mascot name from the story of "The Pied Piper of Hamelin"? If they did that's a very interesting choice since that character was a rat catcher who ended up taking revenge on the people of Hamelin by luring away the children of the town with his magic pipe just like he had done previously to cure the town of its rat infestation. They refused to pay him the agreed upon fee to get rid of the rats so that's why he lured the children away never to be seen again! So he goes from being a rat catcher to a kidnapper and possible murderer. Now that's a helluva mascot for any school to choose! Lol.

It's more interesting than the St. Thomas Tommies, the Augsburg Auggies, Gustavus Adolphus Gusties, or the Saint Johns Johnnies.... that conference is not known for its creativity!

According to their website, that is the basis of the name. https://www.hamline.edu/piper/

OMG! That's hilarious! If you read the whole thing you'll see that back in the 1920's when they decided to change their name from the Red and Gray, one of the options that was considered was The Cardinals! Now think about that for today's championship game!

Yeah makes you wonder if they knew the story or just thought it was a good name because of the title. I do like how they start out talking about how the Pipers are the courageous flute players that lead the troops and lifted their spirits.

Ya except those military pipers have absolutely no connection to the story or poem of The Pied Piper of Hamelin which is the basis of their mascot name. They took quite a leap there! Lol. Maybe they should have copied the creativity of some of the other MIAC schools and just called themselves The Hammies.

Somewhat off topic but Hamline related: Hamline University is known as the “birthplace of intercollegiate basketball.” Hamline hosted and played in the world’s first intercollegiate basketball game on February 9, 1895. The Pipers took on the School of Agriculture, which was connected with the University of Minnesota, losing by a score of 9-3. Though the rules and the way the game was played are different from today’s game, the game was truly an historic moment, not only for Hamline, but for the future of collegiate basketball.
