Obviously you need the knowledge and skill to perform but I don't believe any of these guys would be there if they didn't have some degree of knowledge and skill. I truly believe the most important and probably least focused on, aspect of sport and life in general is the mental aspect. When you see athletes that are "in the zone" it is usually because they are confident and positive that they can perform. The wrong type of coaching, feedback, etc. can zap confidence in a hurry and result in poor performance. Most top professional athletes have a professional sport psychologists to keep them focused on the positive aspects of their game, often times to help them flush the coaches negativity, pressure, etc. Unfortunately most college athletes can't afford their own psychologist and teams don't have them on staff so the athlete is left to manage the mental aspect of the game on their own.

In team sport where you have more players than positions there will always be someone that is not "as good as the next guy". This assessment is not always a fair one and may be based on scholarship vs no scholarship, drafted vs un-drafted (in professional sports), to a lesser extent pedigree (parents are former players, alums, donors, etc.). I believe to be a very successful coach you must find a way to keep all players positive and feeling good about their game. Coach em up, not beat em down and/or lop off their heads if you will.

Without being part of the locker room, on ice in practice or on the bench in a game it is hard to know for sure exactly what kind of Coach Shawhan is but from the tone of a lot of his pre and post game interviews, JSH's etc. he sounds like he focuses a lot on the negative. Do you focus on the one leaker that the goalie gave up or do you focus on the other 30 great saves he made and build off of that, coach him up. Do you focus on the one time the defenseman made a bad read and skated in to traffic or the 20 times he made perfect, quick outlet passes, coach em up. Do you focus on the forwards one missed assignment that cost you a goal or the rest of the game where he covered perfectly and applied good offensive pressure, coach em up.

I guess the point of my rambling is, you said Kero played well this weekend, coach him up, put him in again and build his confidence.

On another note, what's going on with Brice? I thought he made great strides last year and expected him to be a regular this season. I guess I am a little partial to the local guys.

    Go Huskies!
Thats why I think Joe might want to consider going into a weekend telling 2 guys they're each going to get a start.

That's a tough one. I kind of think it should be a one game at a time thing.

What happens when you tell two guys they are each starting one game then the Friday night guy plays lights out? Do you want to ride that hot goalie? Or do you stick with your plan and give Mr. Saturday Night his start anyway?

On the other hand it doesn't seem to work well to tell the guys "you're starting tonight but if you dont get to 1 in 7, you're opening doors tomorrow".

Joe is a goalie that has done a lot of coaching. I can only trust he knows how to handle the boys.

      I like this team.

Well you guys need to pick your poison. do you want to shatter a guys confidence by not giving him the 2nd start or do you want to give 2 guys a shot each weekend without putting unnecessary pressure on either to perform or you don't play next game? I see little harm in a predetermined known rotation going into a weekend.

I agree to find a starter early in the year but I'd like to see a true No. 1 when they come back to the Mac in Nov. Preferably sooner.

Re: Michigan Tech 2018-19: Who Cares What They Name It, We Want It

Joe kept mentioning earning the right to play, but what I believe he ultimately does want is good competition and the depth to put new guys in on Saturday with no drop off.

Back a few years when 4 skaters would be different between Friday and Sat nights, a.k.a Patrick Anderson, Max Vallis the team clicked on all cylinders. I would have to believe with everyone contributing the team dynamic only enhances as "we are all in this. I think this year, the depth is great, but there are guys that will most likely be pretty equal. Fresh legs possibly could also play a factor at home with the opportunity to make more updates to the lineup.

That being said, I like Brice in the lineup, but I think we will see a large majority of the team this year like that year in the past.

Now the goalie position, that is a different animal, never have I seen the carousel last year. I think one of these guys will win out and will be the guy this year.

The Wisco thread is very annoying, and I would hope the Tech guys are reading it going into the weekend. Let's get it done this weekend.....

I am all for competition and pressure. For skaters, work them hard in practice, ride the heck out of them even, but come game time let them play. Be cautious not to point out every mistake. The guys know when they make one. Save the analysis for after the game unless there are some obvious tactical adjustments that need to be made. Harping on a guy for a coughed up puck, missed coverage, etc. is counter productive in my mind and I know there is some of that going on. I've sat close enough during enough games to see it and hear it.

Regarding the goalies, I really think they should give Kero a couple more games. Let him get hot. I thought he did last year when given a few games in a row. Unfortunately he got hurt.

I agree Coach Shawhan should be able to gauge who gives them the best chance to win, just hope he gives who ever it is a little time to get going. Remember Beydoun's first start, didn't even make the entire game if I remember correctly and then didn't get back in for quite a while.

                Go Huskies!

I don't have any worries about the coaching. IMHO we have one of the best, if not the best staff as a whole in all of college hockey. Our coaches know what they are doing and they develop players extremely well.So I agree with Fade, we might not be playing right now like a top team, but give a it a couple of months and then look out.

Also, nationally, it looks to me like, St Cloud, Providence, OSU and Duluth are the teams to beat. Did you see what St Cloud did to BC this evening. ?!

After seeing St Cloud last weekend, they are talented and deep. They get scoring from all 4 lines, their 7th D would be in a lot of teams top 4 and both goalies are tough. Their ranking is very well deserved.

Don't know. I didn't see anything to get bent about.. mostly talk of Jurusik and Berry.. I've played a lot of pick up hockey the past few years with Berry's brother. So except for when they are playing Tech I'd like to see him do well.

Here's to some good games this weekend!

Calling Ford out when he had personal issues and the typical "Ann Arborish" arrogance attitude.

Dooghe should stick to playing hockey. What a little POS.
