Re: Spartan Hockey 2018-2019 - Preparing for Glory

Hirose was recognized today as the first star in the Big Ten last week. Surprisingly it is the first time he has been the #1 Star in his career.

Hard to believe, as part of a line so good it only needs 3 letters to ID it. Best player on the roster right now.

        Also NCAA first star.

Big weekend against Ferris. Sweep and we're definitely ranked.

Just out of curiosity...has there ever been a line this dominate night in, night out? Where would this line rank all time (that you can remember) for you guys?

Yup, Culp,, Ross, Rice in the 1970’s was the best. I’d put the Mike Donnelly line from mid-80’s in 2nd place.

Kennedy-Crowder-Abdelkader made a lot of noise too. Wouldn't it be nice for the KHL line to take us where they did

(edit) And not have two of them give us just three years

To follow up for younger fans...from 1972-1976

                  Tom Ross 138 g 186 a
                  Steve Colp 132 g. 168 a
                  Daryl Rice 96 g. 129 a

Yet, they never played in the NCAA tournament. As dangerous as they were MSU was a 1 line team with average dmen. 1 line can only take you so far.

Ross-Colp-Rice were great, but they probably weren't even the best line in the league then. Mike Zuke-George Lyle-Jim Mayer at Tech were even more dominant and took the Huskies to three straight NCAA title games.

Don't forget about Pat Murray-Kip Miller-Dwayne Norris in 1989-90. Those three were so much fun to watch together. They were the last of the high-flyers before clutch-and-grab took over.

Indeed - good call. Two first-team All-Americans (Miller twice, Norris once) there.

I’ll give you the three trips to the championship game.

The stats say the Lyle-Mayer-Zuke line was about as dominant as the Colp-Rice-Ross line with a slight edge to MSU’s trio. The difference is MSU had the top line and nothing else. The CRR line accounted for over 60 percent of State’s output in 75-76 while the LMZ line accounted for under 50 percent.

                        Colp-Rice-Ross | G | GPG | PTS | PPG |
                        1975-76 | 122 | 3.02 | 281 | 6.97
                        1974-75* | 76 | 2.16 | 197 | 5.77
                        1973-74 | 111 | 2.92 | 254 | 6.68

                        1974-75* | 81 | 2.15 | 150 | 3.94
                        1973-74** | 40 | 1.27 | 109 | 3.43

*Colp and Mayer missed over a third of the season
**Lyle played half the season and Mayer a quarter

Good stat breakdown. That's all true too.

One mitigating factor in my mind is that LMZ did not play together on the top power play unit for the Huskies - Stu Ostlund was inserted in place of Mayer, and Steve Jensen split time with Lyle. And as effective as they were with the puck LMZ was also capable of playing a much more physical style when called upon to do so, which Ross-Colp-Rice would have had a hard time matching.

It all comes down to what qualifiers you consider to make a line "dominant". If they were on the same roster, it would be hard to say who'd get the start.

PS - the biggest reason for the 3 straight title games for Tech was more likely the goaltending of Jim Warden and Bruce Horsch, which was head and shoulders above Ron Clark and Dave Versical.

Another great night for the KHL line, and Milan got in on some of the action as well. Hat trick for Khodorenko, with all coming on the PP. I'd like to see a statistic on how many times that's happened. Interestinly, all five of his goals this year have come on the PP.

Dominant performance with the exception of about 15 minutes to go to 5 minutes to go in the third. Seemed to lose focus and let Ferris get a couple breaks to tighten it up. KHL almost looked bored on a couple and if Lewandowski can get a little more accuracy on that one-timer, he adds a couple more last night as well.

Still not sure what happened to Ferris' goalie. Didn't look like anyone knocked into him from either team. Just fell down and was immediately in pain.

Yes, KHL was dangerous almost every time they were on the ice. Still waiting to see consistant scoring from another line...maybe tonight.

MSU still has defensive lapses, but unlike the last few years is scoring enough to make up for them.

Yes, their goalie appeared to have pulled a muscle and just collapsed. Reminded me a bit of Davis going down in football with no one near him.

The KHL line was unstoppable at times. They definitely get a little too cocky at times and attempt one too many passes for that highlight reel play. Oh well.

The game was interesting in that MSU was largely dominant but had
enough lapses to make it interesting. Even in the 3rd when MSU was outshot and outscored we still possessed the puck a ton.

Their goalie’s injury was strange. I’m pretty sure he was untouched but seeemd to be in a lot of pain. Everyone on the ice, Bulldog and Spartan, looked confused.

Anyways, Cole said earlier in the week that DeRidder would play this weekend. Curious that it might be in Big Rapids with the Dawg Pound.
