  • Re: LSSU Lakers 2018-19

This weekend is giving me bad flashbacks of "Jim Roque" like finishes.

Are the Lakers reading too many of the press clippings again?

BG and Bemidji are going to the 3 on 3 OT, so the Lakers will at least maintain a lead over Bemidji for 4th place.

Ferris State will be on a mission next weekend trying to get in the playoffs and looking for revenge after we swept them in their barn. Lakers are in trouble. We really might need to root for Minnesota State and NMU next weekend.

Lakers have won 20 for the 2nd time since 1995-96. People gripe. Really?

11 of those wins are over the bottom 12 teams of college hockey. 14 of the wins are over the bottom 20 of college hockey. That leaves the Lakers 6-10 against anybody rated over 40 in the RPI. The Lakers are 4-8 against teams with a .500 record or better. This is a team with a weak schedule that managed to pile up a bunch of wins that mean nothing. It will buy Damon a few more years of a system that will never be relevant at a national level. He is trying to mimic a system of Tech (under Pearson), BG and Mankato that have a combined 0 NCAA tournament wins since the formation of the new WCHA.

You have 2 hobey baker candidates that were held off the scoreboard this weekend. Cugglieta and Nellis have no business being candidates as they showed this weekend they are irrelevant if they play a quality opponent. Cugglieta and Nellis have a combined 8 points in 10 games against the 3 best opponents they have played this year (NMU, MSU and BG). Piling up stats against the bottom 10 of college hockey is meaningless.

Compare to the defending national champions. Duluth has only 4 of 19 wins against the bottom 20 of college hockey. Need to win meaningful games to earn respect.

None of that (facts or opinions) changes the more basic fact that the Lakers have taken a big step forward this season. They control their own destiny going into next weekend, with a decent chance to get home ice for the first round of the playoffs.

I did not watch last nights game but I did Fridays night game and the Lakers were just out of sorts . I do not think I have seen them play that bad since they played Alaska at home back in December . Was a bad time to play the way they did .

That’s the makeup of the WCHA. And yet, for the first 5 years of the new league, LSSU was not competitive and didn’t beat those “lesser” teams. So it’s hard to deny that they’re much better this year.

They are better, but deserve no comparison to teams of the past. Such as teams from the 90's.

I think that you make good points but don't forget that college hockey as a whole is much closer, botom to top than it used to be. Didn't like number 55 beat number 5 this last weekend.? And that kind of result is not all that rare.

In addition check out ASU's record. What's their signature win? a tie with Mankato and a win over a very average BU team.Neither of those is saying much, but no one is questioning their right and their being in. They have lost a lot of games to all the quality teams they have played and even lost to several teams below them in the pairwise.

Lakers remain ranked at #19 in USCHO poll despite getting swept at NMU.

Congrats to Calder on earning WCHA Rookie of the Week.

Considering he has 19 points on the season, where he was either the extra forward or saw limited ice time early in the year is really impressive. Hopefully his production keeps up & I think we'll be seeing another 100-pointer out of him.

With the pending loss of Cuglietta, Nellis and Torrel to graduation, he'll certainly be one of the key guys the coaches will be looking to for offense next season, along with Humitz and Gelsinger. We'll need some of the other returning guys to step up their production as well if the Lakers hope to build upon this season. It looks like the Lakers will have 4 freshmen up front next season but you never know how much scoring you're going to get from first year guys.
