Re: The States: Why does Minnesota wanna be Kansas?

Another example of how Minnesota wants to be Kansas (or Flint, MI).

            http://www.startribune.com/gov-mark-...ons/482198271/

Gov. Mark Dayton on Wednesday vetoed a bill that would have killed pollution protections for wild rice, calling it an extreme overreach by state lawmakers and a violation of the federal Clean Water Act.

Dayton said the Legislature has 12 days to come up with another proposal “that respects federal law and protects our precious wild rice and waters.”

The proposed law, passed by the Republican-controlled House and Senate, was tied to a nearly 10-year political and legal battle over Minnesota’s official state grain and a water quality standard for sulfate, a mineral salt pollutant produced primarily by mining operations and wastewater treatment plants.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) had proposed a new standard that was recently overturned by an administrative law judge, who said it was too complicated and unconstitutionally vague. But she upheld the previous standard of 10 milligrams per liter, which has been on the state books since the 1970s.

The bill Dayton vetoed would have required the MPCA to start over on a new rule, which the agency plans to do anyway, and it would have prohibited the agency from enforcing the 10 mg per liter standard while it went through the lengthy rule-making process.

That, Dayton said, would be a violation of the federal Clean Water Act, would have put the pollution control agency in an “impossible bind,” and would inevitably lead to litigation.

Before vetoing the bill, Dayton had asked the Legislature to work with his administration on another plan for wild rice protections. But the proposed bill was approved by both legislative chambers, with supporters saying that industry needed “regulatory certainty.”
Is this the new thing? Screw the environment for "regulatory certainty"? Why do Republicans hate clean air and water so much?

Think about that bolded section for a minutes. That would give any mining company carte blanche to do to the water whatever it wanted as long as the "rule making process" was going on. How ****ing stupid do they think we are?

It's hardly new. Part of the takeover of the GOP by the dullards in 1978 was declaring war on environmental protection and siding with corporate profits over health and life.

Yeah. Basically what I am reading in that article and from the Judge's decision is the standard has been in place since the 70's. That's 40 years ago. Meet the standard. It's not that hard. You can't meet it, don't build the mine.

Oh, I get you. "Regulatory certainty" isn't anything, it's just an excuse to do what they want. Republicans don't use words to convey meaning, they use them as empty syntactical tools.

Lake Elmo is now home to the most toxic fish in the state. Certainly looks like it’s thanks to 3M. So sad.

Is this the recently signed bill where a faith based adoption agency can follow their principles?

Heh. principles include denying children a loving home because they think LGBT people are icky. Fight like hell to discriminate against gays, but anything mentioned in the parable of the Sheep and the Goats? Can't be bothered. Shows that Christians are either very selective as to who their neighbor is, or it shows they hate themselves.
