Well, three weekends to go in the CHA regular season, with 12 points left for the taking. Mercyhurst travels to Penn State this weekend for a Friday/Saturday match-up that will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network (subscription required). This is probably a bigger series for Mercyhurst, as they are still very much in the chase for the regular season title, and currently sitting in second place, four points behind Robert Morris.

In their last meeting in October on the road at Mercyhurst, Penn State lost 2-1 and 5-4 (OT), so this weekend should be another battle. Mercyhurst will be without senior forward Vilma Tanskanen for game one, as she will be sitting out Friday after a game misconduct last weekend against Syracuse. That's one less big forward for Penn State to worry about on Friday night. If Penn State can stay out of the penalty box, they'll do themselves a favor, as Mercyhurst averages two more penalties per game than Penn State - a favor, that is, if Penn State's power play shows up, and they're going to need to show up big in facing Mercyhurst's very strong penalty kill.

Tanskanen did nothing against Penn State the first time. Emma Nuutinen had a big series against them and against Colgate. If Penn State can neutralize Summer Rae Dobson and Emma Nuutinen good things will happen this weekend. Mercyhurst has struggled to manufacture points for Nuutinen as much as Penn State has struggled to get Heising unleashed. Both are lightning in a bottle.

Penn State and Mercyhurst are scoreless after one period. Mercyhurst leads the shots on goal 7-5, both teams are 0-2 on the power play, and both teams are 8-8 in the faceoff circle. The stats show an even game, but Mercyhurst seemed to spend a little more time in the Penn State zone, but neither team had any real sustained plays...just lots of scrumming.

Penn State and Mercyhurst are tied 1-1 after two periods. Mercyhurst scored on the power play on a very lazy Penn State line change that left Maggie Knott wide open to walk in and score. Penn State got their goal on a really nice turn-around shot from Katie McMillan. Mercyhurst leads the shots on goal 18-15, and both teams have four penalties. Neither team is dominating, as both teams are working hard to break up plays before they really get rolling.

Penn State and Mercyhurst finish the OT tied 1-1. Mercyhurst led shots on goal 28-22, and went 1-5 on the power play. Penn State went 0-4 on the power play. It was a pretty evenly-matched game all the way through, with both teams getting some solid chances. There's not much to pick at, as both teams looked about as even as it could be. Back at it tomorrow at 3:00.

Appreciate the updates Zed. I see Kennedy Blair got an assist for Hurst. Looking forward to seeing that highlight. Hard to believe tomorrow is senior day already, for Penn State.

Blair came out of the net to play the puck when she saw how slow Penn State was being with their line change, got it up ice in a flash, and Maggie Knott was pretty much free to go. It was pretty embarrassing.

As far as the line change, the announcer in the Robert Morris game was not a fan of Penn State's dump and change lines style and they paid the Piper.

I agree with Kampresal on Brennerman being the MVP.

Penn State and Mercyhurst skated to a 2-2 OT tie to finish the weekend series in a crazy game. The refs were about as whistle-happy as they come, calling a combined 19 penalties for a total of 49 penalty minutes. They let so much stuff go, and then called the weakest stuff for penalties, it made no sense. The game included the first penalty shot I've ever seen at Penn State, with Natalie Heising getting the chance but not scoring (it's okay, because she scored a regular goal anyway). The game also included a game misconduct for goalie Jenna Brenneman - who knew you can't punch another player in the head? It was that kind of game, though.

If you watched the game, I'd love to hear how you saw it.

Strange game for sure. Penn State on the puck fast, get shots off quick from the point. Mercy shots blocked from the point non-stop. Mercy powerplay continues to struggle but same units out there repetitively with no success, and too many 2v1's against them while on pp. Penn state uses the ice well, Mercy always playing on perimeter with no good shots on net especially on pp.

End of season rapidly approaching, every team needs to bear down. Lindenwood throttled Robert Morris 6-1 (?) so a win for Mercy would have been huge for the team.

I'll call this the missed penalty shot but the Hail Mary bloop goal. The tie is a win line should have been saved for today for sure.

I was wondering where junior forward Brooke Madsen was for yesterday's game. She took a late two-minute boarding call in Friday's game, and the CHA decided it was more like a game misconduct, so she sat out yesterday.
