With the Kampersal hire, and his own comments about wanting to be in the Frozen Four when they host in 2022, I think Penn State looks at every game as a chance to move the program forward. And imo every program should be attempting that every game.

But like you, not sure what to call these one off non conference games, either! I see it’s 1-1 after one.

      Haha, ok.

Cornell ties it with six seconds to go in the third. OT coming up.

That was probably the best hockey I've seen this team play all season, especially at home. If not for a really untimely penalty with 22 seconds left in the third, Penn State had a 3-2 win in the bag. Cornell went on a 6-on-4 to tie it before the buzzer, and it went to OT and finished 3-3. I haven't seen the stats, and I'm working on video, so that's all I have, but it was full speed for the entire game - really fast and really fun to watch.

Terrible call. With 22 seconds. To go... offense initiated contact with head down.

I miss a lot because I'm messing with a camera through the whole game, but the timing of that penalty couldn't have been any worse, especially knowing Cornell would go 6-on-4 to finish the third period.

The call was a cross check, so it doesn't really matter who initiated the contact.

Numbers 20 and 22 were the scorers for Cornell, you are not going to have one of them cut in on you Malkin like and then get a shot off from three feet away. I have never seen a cross check called on a rush and cut in and personally think it was a weak call. Yes, the timing was bad but you don't let a player walk in.

                    That makes one of us.

. . . and personally think it was a weak call.
I can't speak to whether it was a good call, just that, if it was for cross-checking, then who initiated the contact isn't relevant.

Yes, the timing was bad . . .
Not really. In fact, the downside of taking a penalty there was much lower than it usually is. The ensuing power play had a maximum duration of 22 seconds in which Cornell could take advantage, rather than the normal 120. Yes, it meant that Cornell could go to a 6-on-4, but the expected cost of the penalty was probably only about a quarter of what it would be with more than two minutes left in regulation. People need to stop privileging what happens at the end of a sporting event as somehow being more important than what comes before it. The threshold of how dangerous Cornell's scoring opportunity needed to be in order to justify taking a penalty was substantially lower than it was for any of the other five penalties PSU took during the game.

Penn State's problem was that they couldn't kill 22 seconds of power play. In fact, rather than blaming the officials, the Nittany Lions really ought to accept that the reason they didn't win was that their penalty kill was terrible all game long. They were shorthanded for a total of 8:00 (0:58 of which was down two players), and gave up three goals in that time. You aren't going to win many games with a penalty kill operating at 50%.

                    . . . but you don't let a player walk in.
Okay, but you'd better be prepared to go shorthanded if that's the approach you take.

WTH happened to the Lion Vision? With all that football money, Penn State needs to make a little money off of women's hockey?

Don't know on Jackson, pretty sure Kampresal was picked over Jackson. I am sure Jackson did not expect Brandwene to retire and I am sure losing to RIT at the CHA' s did not help Jackson's cause. Just a guesstimate though.

Heard That Jackson speaks during most Cornell timeouts which is a credit to him. That Cornell team sure looked good but Penn State should have beat them. Done in by a backhand shot from the slot. Arggh.

If Penn State had been ahead by two goals with 22 seconds left in the third period, I'd agree with that, but not when a power play goal would tie the game with no real time left for Penn State to regain the lead and win the game. A much earlier penalty that results in a game-tying power play goal, when there is plenty of game time left to get that lead back, isn't the same as one with 22 seconds left in the game. Finishing matters.

Absolutely right, and it was very out of character for a team with a penalty kill that entered the game at 86.2%. Cornell was good at creating a mess in front of the net.

Game two of next weekend's series against Lindenwood is being broadcast on BTN (Big Ten Network). The game is Monday, January 21, at 2:00 (Eastern):

                            https://www.btn2go.com/game/lindenwo...st-on-01212019

The streaming link says 2:00, and season tickets say 2:00, but the Penn State team website schedule says 3:00, so if they correct that or change the time I'll post it here.

Okay, Penn State says the January 21st game is at 3:00, not 2:00 like it says on the season tickets. The BTN streaming link has been changed to 3:00 also.
