Normally I'd agree, but its a little low rent to go after Biden for praising a guy who helped pass a cancer research bill after Biden's son died of cancer. Maybe find some other angle to use against the dude...

He could've done it in private rather than in the $200,000 speech... (which made its way into Republican ads for Upton who ended up winning).

I disagree. Politics, while important, is not everything, and it is not the measure of our lives.

If the issue is Biden shouldn't be accepting that kind of money while he's thinking about running for Prez, okay. But that's not the point of the message. Its him praising a Republican before the election, when his praise is because the guy helped secure cancer research funding in the name of Biden's recently deceased son. That's when lefties need to step off and leave this one alone or you do more damage to your cause than any benefit you get from attacking a grieving father.

There's plenty of material to go after Biden with since he's been in DC since the Jefferson administration. This isn't one of them.

A-****ing-men. The militant progressive side of the Democratic Party is going to metastasize into something really dangerous to advancement of the party if they keep this crap up.

Going after the guy for saying thanks for helping us try to cure cancer? **** that. I want nothing to do with that litmus-tested Tea Party crap.

There are a lot of people who voted for that bill... you don't need to go out of your way to publicly advocate for some herp a derp who voted against PPACA and is anti-abortion among other things, weeks before an election in which you desperately need to win the house back.

trix, Kep thinks FDR was a conservative, and even he's not on board with this one. Now either the "plutes" have got to him or you're barking up the wrong tree.

It isn't everybody on the far left. Plenty of us way out here on the party's edge understand that politics is typically an incremental activity that requires matrixed, pragmatic alliances. In fact, I would say many of us on the far left are actually far more patient and tolerant of compromise than, ironically, "moderate" leadership or at least the moderate back benchers, who call the wahmbulance whenever anyone has the bad manners to voice a preference for a real liberal policy.

I believe we should have limitless aspirations for improving the country, its laws, and its government. Brakes are important for safety but acceleration is vital to motion. As we move into an era where there is public tolerance, even desire, for radical change, going too slowly is just as damaging as going too quickly. Sometimes, "a chasm cannot be crossed in two small jumps." Certain truths, like a rethinking of the friction of government on business as a creator rather than limiter of liberty (in keeping the wolves from devouring the rest of the biosphere), are edge cases rather than centrist muddling.

Plus, showing you aren't 100% divisive is not a bad thing when half the country is upset that neither side talks to the other.

Praise the good things and rip the bad about the other side.

This is a bit of an exaggeration. FDR was a pragmatist, though given his background and social circle he was obviously sympathetic to conservative, paternalist voices. He saw Keynsian policies as an untried alternative and, recognizing that classical economic policy wasn't helping the US out of the Depression, he tried the New Deal to jump start the economy. However, he withdrew those healthy policies too quickly and caused the engine to stall out again. The Depression was able to continue because FDR faced tremendous pressure to revert the US to a plutocratic economy as soon as possible.

When the war came and it was an existential crisis to make the US productive he finally relented and allowed a full Keynsian solution, with the result that the middle class was created and the US became a great economy and a great country.

As soon as the banksters recaptured control of the government and repealed the New Deal, slowly at first in the 70s and then at full gallop in the 80s, the US economy has again cratered for everyone except the super rich. Obviously the rich do not want the general public to make the connection, hence the spectacular array of misleading or flat out dishonest narratives generated by their think tanks and the 1%-owned media with the brainwashing effect on inattentive members of the public that we see here every day.

There are three economic lessons from the 20th century: pure capitalism is lethal to freedom and democracy, pure communism is lethal to freedom and democracy, a mixed economy that preserves private personal property rights but socializes public assets such as utilities and significant industries and heavily regulates the financial sector, and which caps personal wealth (albeit at still obscene levels) avoids the worst excesses of both. FDR seems to have understood all three lessons and incorporated them into his economic policies. His reward is having been the greatest president since Lincoln by a Secretariat-like margin.
