The speaker is the diplomat, the whip is the enforcer. In a well functioning Congress neither of them is getting too much facetime. On state and regional issues you push your local yokel Senators and Reps out there to be the public face of ethanol subsidies for Iowa or strip mining for West Virginia or head lice for Massachusetts, and you keep the caucus machinery back on the main bus transmitting power, orders, threats, and goodies. If you must fight nationally you use the president if you're in power or the stooge you are grooming to be president if you're the loyal opposition. That’s the whip. The speaker is the public face.
But glory boys like Newt and Schumer are long-run disabilities. LBJ ran Congress like his private b-tch kennel, but nobody outside of DC knew who he was until he got the Veep nod.

Rick Saccone is going down faster than Stormy Daniels. 36% reporting, and Lamb leads by 8%.

Down to 0.4% lead at 94% reporting now. *gulp*

0.6% at 96% reporting. PA allows a recount at 0.5% or less.

Lamb (D) up 1,238 votes w/ 96% of precincts counted. Of the 25 outstanding precincts, 18 are in Washington/Westmoreland Co. and should favor Saccone (R). *Probably* not by enough to overtake Lamb (D) in raw votes. #PA18

This is going to be a circus.
Michigan Tech: "Working with scraps and guys from places so remote that Houghton seems like a metropolis"
98% reporting, and Lamb leads by 0.3%, or about 700 votes.

However this shakes out, the optics are still pretty bad for Dump:
Lamb (D) won Moon Township by 6.5%. Trump carried it by 11% --> https://t.co/DBXnEx9hsH

Lamb now up just 95 votes with absentee left to count.
This is so close it won't be decided before the filing date of next Tuesday for both guys.

Whoever wins the absentee ballots wins the election.

Lamb is heavily favored due to how much of them are from Dem heavy Allegheny.
The latter account is an independent, #NeverTrump conservative that I follow. I trust his analysis.

Lamb wins the Allegheny absentee by 752 votes
Lamb now up 847 with Allegheny all done. Roughly 3200 absentee left in red counties, plus some votes left in Westmoreland.
Saccone needs over 60% of the absentee unless Westmoreland's votes swing even more to Saccone.

There will undoubtedly be a recount, but Lamb should prevail unless there are shenanigans.
Regardless, this was a landslide Trump district.

There are exceptions (e.g. Roy Moore) but most of the time the "bad candidate" label is applied as a somewhat lazy post-facto rationalization for an electoral outcome that people don't like. https://t.co/wfRGfsntkA

Generally speaking, Nate nails it. If Trump had been half as stupid as he's been, Saccone would've had this in the bag.
