*edit* I'm mistaken. Starman and his Tesla are currently circling our Planet before one last burn to put in on a path for Mars orbit. Elon says the cameras on the car should provide amazing views of Mars. The second stage booster is rumored to have missed it's target and was lost. */edit*

I always stopped to watch Shuttle launches; NASA has always been an interest of mine. Is it wrong to think this was on par with a Mercury or Gemini launch in importance?
So there still is live streams from the roadster. Every once in a while, it's pointing at the earth, which is a pretty interesting view from a car.

I agree. Enough to give me goosebumps.

These people have the right idea. It was the first thing I thought of as well.

It's going into solar orbit with aphelion near the Martian orbit.

So... kinda. It's a demonstration of how we set up a MERT (Mars Earth Rapid Transit).

I personally also think it's the best possible Dark Forest Defense. Any sufficiently advanced intelligent civilization that detects it will think "these creatures have a sense of humor, let's go visit them!" and soon we'll be sharing inter-stellar porn. Any accidentally advanced pre-self-destruction violent civilization that detects it will think "these creatures are no threat at all" and go back to listening to their version of Fox and bombing themselves out of existence.

That is of course assuming Morlocks even make it to the stars, which is highly debatable, given that ours would have wiped themselves out centuries ago if we hadn't stupidly intervened.

                        Whoa. It's waaaaaaaay beyond Mars.

Mars has a mean orbit of 1.52 AU while Starman gets all the way out to 2.61 AU.

                        Thanks.

It is allegedly his, as in his actual car that he used to drive. Though I assume it has a few after market adjustments. :-)
