        mookie would challenge this.

dollars to doughnuts that when the asteroid hit it was higher. (just nobody bothered to measure)

But if a volcano goes BOOM! or an asteroid goes CRASH! then we have global cooling.

Yes, trump made sure to interfere on this one.

WASHINGTON – Trump administration appointees overruled concerns from their own technical experts in deciding not to impose tougher smog requirements on the Wisconsin county where Foxconn Technology Group planned a $10 billion manufacturing facility, newly released documents show.

Under President Donald Trump, the Environmental Protection Agency initially had recommended labeling Racine County as violating federal air quality standards for ozone in 2017 — a designation that could have required Taiwan-based Foxconn to install expensive state-of-the-art pollution controls at its flat-screen manufacturing plant.

But after appeals by GOP Gov. Scott Walker and at the apparent direction of then-EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, the EPA reversed course in 2018, ruling Racine was in compliance with the ground-level smog standard. The decision followed weeks of objections from EPA career staff, who said they saw no technical basis to justify it, according to correspondence released under a public records request.

“I am still in disbelief,” one wrote, after citing new directions from Pruitt that clashed with the EPA’s earlier plan to label the region in “nonattainment.” “I do not see a sound technical basis for the area we are being directed to finalize in Wisconsin,” Jenny Liljegren, a scientist in EPA’s Air and Radiation Division, wrote in an April 11, 2018, e-mail.

The funniest part of this whole thing is scientists like Jenny Liljegren are surprised by this? They think rules matter? They think scientific data matters? It doesn't. The profit motive is all that matters.

In the pre-genus homo eras, CO2 levels were higher. Was there life on this planet during those times? What caused the CO2 levels then? Why'd they drop?

Another article to peruse on topic.

In the big picture, 400 ppm is a low-to-middling concentration of CO2 for the planet Earth.

Some 500 million years ago, when the number of living things in the oceans exploded and creatures first stepped on land, the ancient atmosphere happened to be rich with about 7,000 ppm of carbon dioxide. Earth was very different back then: the Sun was cooler, our planet was in a different phase of its orbital cycles, and the continents were lumped together differently, changing ocean currents and the amount of ice on land. The planet was maybe as much as 10 degrees C (18°F) warmer than today, which might seem surprisingly cool for that level of greenhouse gas; with so many factors at play, the link between CO2 and temperature isn’t always easy to see.
We'll kill ourselves off (unless the Sun or the planet beat us to it), but the planet will still have life. Call it a reboot. Nature wins.

We're important because as of now we're the only form of life that we know knows it's alive. We're the only source of ethics or values or purpose; nothing else has any of that. We're the only real thing that counts as a god, or free, or responsible; the only prisoner to break out of nature's circle of determinism.

We should protect that at least until we discover something else that does it. We could be the only one ever.
