A lot of overlap, actually. Libertarianism has always been a reservoir where polluters and other industries could find apologists, enablers, and other useful idiots. Witness what the Kochs did to Cato.

        J. S. Mill is disappoint.

I used to lean libertarian. The problem is when you realize that it is inflicting massive amounts of damage on everyone around you then you change. I don't mind libertarian views when it's not harmful to others (gay rights, pro-choice, etc.) but when you completely ignore good solid oversight, and regulation, I don't want anything to do with you anymore.

You and me both. It's the perfect philosophy for sciency young white males. It appeals highly to our vanity and has a quasi-rationalist coherence like engineering (or, for that matter, Marxism). It's Objectivism for people who read.

Happily, because a lot of the people who initially fall for it are pretty smart, it's also fairly easy to escape from, unlike Rand who, since it attracts the stupid and unimaginative, holds them in thrall for a lifetime.

But there's a difference between accepting the eventual certainty of death and engaging in behaviors and policies that add to the suffering of millions, most of whom live in areas of the world where people are already suffering.

Dennis Green was closer to right.

I will say libertarians are like the one group outside of (some) dem socialists that actually cares about how large the national security apparatus has gotten, domestic surveillance, and actually ending our awful foreign policy, ending the war on drugs etc. or at least that used to be the case during the Bush era. That's part of what drew me to that ideology previously.

So since we are all just going to die anyway, the it would be totally ok for someone to murder you and your family. As long as you enjoy the ride.

                                Got it.

edit- it's interesting to see the responses of people who totally buy into the jobs and money are the most important things ever line of thinking. Especially when that line is coming from people who are going to make a HUGE amount of money on your labor and harm. The version of capitalism that is being sold to us today is the kind that ends up with a pretty violent revolution, when the people left behind have nothing to lose. But, for the moment, the great manipulators in the sky have managed to make factions of those people fight each other instead of the end cause of who is harming all of us.
