Just a couple of years later, we put together what might be the two best seasons in RPI history. I was not there, so tell me what changed?

For one, we started to award athletic scholarships.

I had the honor of covering that 81-82 team for the Poly. It was a rough season but the first scholarship athletes were freshman and a great class was on the way. I remember being in the lobby of the team hotel on Huntington Avenue in Boston and the staff was signing a recruit. It was John Carter.

That would require Brown beating Princeton AND Dartmouth.

Yep, the first half of season 1. Announced as having played hockey for RPI and UML. I think they did a contestant search around Boston for that half-season, as a lot of the contenders were from that area.

Scholarships started (I think) in 81-82. That team was beset by injuries to arguably 2 most important players, and had a lot of youth. You could postulate that 81-82 was a good foundation for the senior leadership in 84-85. However, it was a year similar to this one in terms of frustration and missed expectations. I wouldn't correlate to the future too much, that season was an up and coming coach's third year, where the current coach has had innumerable recruiting classes to make his mark.

was there any mention here of Dartmouth's classy recognition of Ed Weaver's passing? It fits in this thread, if not.

I believe it was mentioned in the score thread. Also, the Dartmouth commentators had mentioned it.
