  • 2012 NCHA Peters Cup Playoffs

Here are the final regular season standings as listed on the conference site:

    1 St. Norbert (15-5-5) 12 4 2 26
    2 St. Scholastica (14-7-4) 9 5 4 22
    3 UW-River Falls (16-7-2) 10 6 2 22
    4 UW-Stevens Point (12-9-4) 8 6 4 20
    5 UW-Superior (9-9-7) 4 7 7 15
    6 UW-Eau Claire (11-11-3) 5 11 2 12
    7 UW-Stout (8-16-1) 4 13 1 9

I don't know the tiebreakers, but assuming the conference does and listed CSS in second for a reason, here are the quarterfinal matchups:

    #1 SNC - bye
#2 CSS vs. #7 UW Stout
    #3 UWRF vs. UWEC
    #4 UWSP vs UWSup

If seeds hold, the semis would be SNC-Point, and CSS-UWRF.

    Let the games begin...
    St. Norbert College Green Knights
    NCHA regular season champs: 97-99, 02-08, 10-12, 14, 16, 19
    NCHA playoff champs: 98-99, 03-05, 07-08, 10-14, 17-19, 24
    NCAA Champions: 2008, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2018
    ---
SNC women: 2013 O'Brien Cup Champions

Re: 2012 NCHA Peters Cup Playoffs

SP and Superior had really close series not sure who would be the favorite. Superior had so many ties this season. I think RF will fold under pressure against a tuff Saint team. But as ever year in this league it seems to be anybodies games, whoever is hot.

Re: 2012 NCHA Peters Cup Playoffs

Those are the correct pairings, as CSS earned the #2 seed based on head-to-head with UWRF.

As much as I'd like to see SNC win it again - and they are playing much better in the second half of the season - I don't think the Cup is by any means a sure thing. This is not the same juggaurnaut as some seasons. SNC can win it, but will have to earn it.

Question is, does the title game loser still get an NCAA bid? Here's hoping for seeds to hold everywhere else...
      St. Norbert College Green Knights
      NCHA regular season champs: 97-99, 02-08, 10-12, 14, 16, 19
      NCHA playoff champs: 98-99, 03-05, 07-08, 10-14, 17-19, 24
      NCAA Champions: 2008, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2018

I do not think the NCHA will get two teams in. I only see 3 west teams in and that will be the AC teams. As stated who ever wins the Peter's Cup will have to earn it as the conference is so balanced this year. Should be a great Peter's Cup.

My Predictions for the First Round Series:
          1 -- Stout @ CSS.
The Blue Devils did not fare well against the Saints this season, going 0 - 2 - 1.
          Outcome: Sweep by CSS.
          2 -- Eau Claire @ River Falls
The Blugolds went 1 - 2 against the Falcons this season.
Outcome: Sweep by River Falls, although the games will be tight.
          3 -- Superior @ Stevens Point.
The YellowJackets went 1 - 0 - 2 against the Pointers this season.
Outcome: Each team wins regulation game. Point wins the mini game to move to the next round. Home crowd is big advantage for the Pointers.
          SNC Men:
          Five Time National Champions: 2008, 2011, 2012, 2014. 2018....
          NCHA Champions: 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017. 2018, 2019...
          SNC Women:
          O'Brien Cup Champions: 2013.

I don't think CSS has a chance to win. In tough games they always seem to get out coached.

Re: 2012 NCHA Peters Cup Playoffs

Going to try predicting out the whole tournament and see where I end up.

              UW-Stout @ CSS
The Bluedevils play their typical wide open style but I think the Saints are to sound all-around for Stout to win. Stout 4-3 Fr., CSS 3-1, 2-0

              UWEC @ UWRF
The Bluegolds are big and do provide some matchup problems for RF however the Falcons are the faster, better team. If RF plays like they did this weekend in splitting with CSS and UWS the Falcons sweep. RF 4-1 Fr., EC 3-1 Sa., RF 2-1 OT Mini

              UWS @ UWSP
I believe UWSP has slightly better skaters and an edge in goaltending most nights. However the Pointers struggle to keep their heads at times and I think Superior can frustrate them. UWS 3-3, 4-3

              Round 2

              UWS @ SNC
I think UWS winning at SNC is asking to much of this Yellowjackets team but this game could easily be headed for OT. SNC 4-3

              UWRF @ CSS
Two games were very good and one got out of hand. Friday nights game was the best played game start to finish by two teams I have seen all season. Neither team gave an inch or made bonehead mistakes and CSS escaped with an early goal for the 1-0 win. It is hard to beat a team four times in the NCHA and I believe RF has a great shot at winning this game but its been all CSS so far so it is hard to go against that. CSS 3-2

              Finals

              CSS @ SNC
I like what CSS does against every other team in the NCHA but not against SNC. This one will leave something to be desired. SNC 4-1

                Round 1

                UW-Stout @ CSS

As much as I feel it will be a good series, CSS in the mini-game

                UW-EC @ UW-RF

                RF sweep

                UW-Superior @ UW-SP

Is the NCHA Quarterfinals the only place in all of college hockey that still uses the mini-game? I'm pretty sure it is but thankfully we haven't had to play in one since 2001.

It's whole lot better procedure than the one and done format. It would be even better to come back the next day and play a full game if a two game series ends up tied. Make it a race to 3 points, but if after 2 games it is 2-2 play a full game.

The MCHA uses the mini-game in their Quarterfinals.

A WIAC school leaks the UW schools are looking to form recognized WIAC Hockey conference and the playoff talk gets extinguished. I say lets focus on the present and save the future for the post-season when the talk was likely supposed to occur.
