Watching the Harvard - Quinnipiac game tonight on NESN, there has been a lot of side talk about college hockey in Connecticut. I don't expect fans outside CT or who don't have some connection with a CT team to care much, but I think it would be great for CT college hockey if we had a competition, more or less modelled after the Beanpot, for college hockey in CT. We've now got 4 D-1 teams (Yale, UConn, Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac) and there is plenty of interest in college hockey in the state. Games could be played in Bridgeport or Hartford or both places. Maybe call it the Nutmeg Cup.

Re: Nutmeg Cup
One issue with this is the amount of non-league games available to the teams. For three of them, it's 7 (Q-Pac gets 12), and although it'd foster a great state showcase, I'm unsure about Yale's willingness to use 2 NC games on Atlantic teams. We know UConn and Sacred Heart will take games against anyone (although what would it do to UConn's yearly tournament?), and Q-Pac fosters a good relationship with their old Atlantic rivals. Not to mention you'd probably have to have set opponents (so Yale never plays Q-Pac and Sacred Heart never plays UConn).

Re: Nutmeg Cup
I really like the idea. Even if it was bi-annual or every four years Yale might play in it and it could be broadcast throughout the stateRinks Visited

Re: Nutmeg Cup
I've also heard rumors about this (men's and women's). With the scheduling constraints I don't see it becoming reality. Harvard manages with the beanpot but I don't see Yale doing anything with SHU or UConn on an annual basis.Quinnipiac Bobcats

Re: Nutmeg Cup
Maybe play the first round in B'port and the second in Hartford...and vice versa on a rotating basis...
Also, might be fun if the whole tournament could be played over Thanksgiving or Christmas holiday...
Yale is really the only team with an out-of-conf problem...would it really be such a problem to devote 2 of seven o-o-c games to instate rivals...Yale already usually schedules one or the other of Sacred Heart or Uconn most years...Arguably, for Yale, a game against SH or Uconn would be even more meaningful if it were played for a cup...
