As an aside, ticket sales as of 4:00 P.M. central for Friday night's game were at the 15,543 mark. Pretty phenomenal.

If they all show up and then some, Biddco might be right, there will be 16,000 fans there to potentially disappoint. Even if we don't get some points (bite my tongue), we are going to represent.

Two can play this game, Biddco. January is misspelled in the thread header.

Coach Blais throws down the gauntlet with some bulletin board material:

          http://www.omaha.com/article/2012011...-no-1-bulldogs

Even the freakin' newspaper here doesn't know the Clink's capacity for hockey. Guess he's too lazy to look at the arena's own web site:

          http://www.centurylinkcenteromaha.co...fications.aspx

Odd, this new web site (since Centurylink bought Qwest) lists an even larger hockey capacity now, 17,100. Interesting to see what gets announced on Friday night.

The guy that wrote this article is actually the paper's beat writer for the Omaha Stormchasers. Guess he needs something to do in the winter now

I could be wrong here, but I think the CenturyLink website gives the capacity whereas the paper has given the sellout. In a lot of stadiums/arenas it's common to sell standing room tickets day off. It sounds weird, but it happens. Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, NE does it all the time. I don't know which number is which, but I do know 16K is right around the official "sellout" number for the hockey configuration of seats for CenturyLink center.

Whatever they can sell or pack in there will be great regardless!

That's funny that you guys call it "funny" that people would pay for standing room only tickets... We think its funny you've never heard of standing room only tickets at a hockey game

hehehe, I don't think teams have been intimated UMD. Opposing teams have been outplayed. I would hope a team like UNO would not get intimated in a matchup like this.

That article is a lot of bluster from Blais that makes me chuckle.

UNO fans intimidating? Haha. UMD playing in front of a large hostile crowd? Been there done that.

On Friday night, we're going to hopefully go after them, knowing they're a fast-starting team," Blais said. "Even if we come out of the first period 0-0, it'll offset any momentum they have being No. 1 and defending national champions.
                lol. Yeah no.

With all his bluster I thinking a win for UMD on Friday and a loss on Saturday. Cannot wait to spoil the party

                  Agree.

The whole "what does the place seat for hockey thing" has been kind of an issue here for a long time. Various web sites have various numbers and the whole thing got complicated by the fact that the City added seats in the upper level at one end of the arena (about 1500) a few years ago after it had been built that changed it again, then, as well. Some of these web sites list the pre-expansion capacity, still.

Obviously, we know the OWNER of the building (I mean, what better source could you have?) now lists this capacity as 17,100.

The school's own web site lists the number as 15,596. However, I know from personally speaking to Nate Neufind, who is UNO's Director of Ticket Operations last year, at my renewal, that that number is the amount of seats in the arena that UNO directly controls. The arena is controlled and operated by the non-profit entity the City of Omaha set up to do so, MECA:

                  http://www.omahameca.com/

MECA sells seat licenses (club seating) that are owned by the license holders for all events in the arena (sorta):

                  http://www.centurylinkcenteromaha.co...ubSeating.aspx

UNO does not control these seats. There are "more than 1000" of them (that doesn't mean that is how many are actually owned, though, and these get relinquished if you don't exercise your first right of refusal for a specific event):

                  http://www.centurylinkcenteromaha.co...ion/Facts.aspx

There are also 32 suites in the arena, two of which are for rental on a game by game basis (and they are the two largest suites in the arena--in the corners). Each suite holds up to 33 people (Fire Marshall regulations, varying by the suite size) and have fixed seating outside the suite, in front of the suite itself. Having personally looked into both game by game suite rental and buying a suite at the arena myself when the arena opened, I can tell you that each and every individual in the suite must have a game ticket to be admitted to the arena (i.e., they must be purchased). That is another 1056 tickets, potentially, then. You add up the school's capacity number and these numbers and all of a sudden the math that gets you to Centurylink's own number from their web site (17,100) then starts making sense.

I am unaware of standing room only tickets for any event at the arena. They certainly have never been needed for hockey. Perhaps there is a Creighton basketball fan out there that could shed some light on that one. I've never heard of any, though.

Mavs won't be intimidated by No. 1 Bulldogs

                      By Rob White
                      WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

                      Minnesota-Duluth.

Defending national champions. Unanimous No. 1. Undefeated since Oct. 15 at 13-0-3.

UNO knows all this and cares for none of it.

"I'll guarantee we're going after them," UNO coach Dean Blais said. "We're not going to give them the respect that they've earned over the last three months."

Minnesota-Duluth comes to the CenturyLink Center for a big — bigger for UNO — series this weekend, with games Friday night at 6:37 and Saturday night at 7:07.

The Bulldogs are 12-3-3 overall and tied with Minnesota for the WCHA lead at 10-2-2. Unranked UNO is 10-8-4 overall, but is in fourth place in the conference at 7-4-3, five points behind the leaders.

UNO wants a Friday night sellout of 15,959 after a near-miss last year in a promotion against Wisconsin, when 15,137 turned out.

"Last year we had a great crowd against (Wisconsin), and hopefully the turnout this year will be just as good," said sophomore forward Matt White, an assistant captain. "It'll help us. We feed off the crowd."

How much the crowd impacts the game remains to be seen. The Bulldogs earned three points in a weekend series at Wisconsin earlier this season, playing in front of crowds of more than 10,000 and 12,000.

"The crowd will be jacked, and we've got to give them something to cheer about," Blais said. "It's going to be interesting to see how Duluth reacts to our crowd. They haven't played in front of that. They've played at Wisconsin, but Duluth isn't (traditionally) to Wisconsin (fans) like a North Dakota or a Minnesota ... although it's getting that way."

Winning a national title will do that for a program.

At UNO anyway, the line between respect and fear hasn't been crossed yet.

"We've just got to throw it right back at them," said junior forward Brent Gwidt, another assistant captain. "They're a fast, hard-working, talented team. But so are we. We're a fast, physical team. We're going to be playing in front of our fans.

"We've been waiting for this ... it's been marked on our calendars. So if we can come out fast and physical, get them with our speed and physical play, it might be a long weekend for them."

The Bulldogs came out fast against UNO in Duluth last season, scoring three first-period goals while winning the opener 4-1. UNO turned the tables the following night in a 5-2 win.

"It was a great series, a hard-fought split," White said. "It was great to beat them on the road, but we want more than that this time."

After last year's series with UNO, Minnesota-Duluth went 6-1 the rest of the way en route to the national championship.

"On Friday night, we're going to hopefully go after them, knowing they're a fast-starting team," Blais said. "Even if we come out of the first period 0-0, it'll offset any momentum they have being No. 1 and defending national champions."

The Bulldogs are in a prominent position again despite graduation losses that led to them being picked to finish fifth in the WCHA. UNO was picked fourth.

"They're well-coached and they're really talented, all the way through their four lines, all the way down their defense, and they've got good goalies," Gwidt said. "They're talented, just like us. Hard-working, just like us. I think we match up pretty well with them."

Blais, along with forward Josh Archibald, rejoined the team late last week after being part of Team USA for the World Juniors tournament.

Blais watched Saturday's practice. He knows his team stayed sharp during the Christmas break and played well in their first series back against Quinnipiac.

                      So, here comes Duluth.

"They're playing with a lot of confidence, and going into (No. 8) Western Michigan and winning twice last weekend means their players went home and kept themselves in good shape and haven't lost any of their momentum that they had before Christmas," Blais said. "But we haven't lost anything, either."

By the way...I forgot my rant..

I was excited for UNO's acceptance in the WCHA for two reasons:

                      2. The new arena and town to road trip

                      1. The Maverick hockey uniforms. Seeing so much red on a hockey uniform made me want to see it in person. They had red socks, breezers, jerseys, helmets. Red is my favorite color and it would have been cool to see. But NOOOOOO they change their jerseys to have more black. BOoo.

What I expected, a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing. That's not bulletin board material in a mites locker room. And at first I wanted to say that was crap to say that Wisconsin wasn't much of a crowd... Then I remembered I was there and it wasn't. Then again I remember them doing well at a coupke games at the X last year...

Re: tUMD @ UNO: On Friday, Janurary 13th UMD will disappoint 16,000 Maverick Fans

Quick follow-up to my previous post and maybe I should have just edited it, but............

My post underscores an ongoing financial issue the UNO Athletic Department has relative to it's lease at the Clink. This lease runs out at the end of next season. In 2002-03, UNO’s last year playing at the Omaha Civic Auditorium, the school cleared nearly $1 million in profit from hockey. They have had deficits ever since.

UNO does not have the ownership rights (read: ticket revenue from the club sections) to what are arguably the best seats in the house nor do they control any of the suites or their associated revenue. The only revenue the school derives from playing there is from ticket sales.

Either we'll build a new on-campus arena or we will negotiate a better lease and build the practice facility we so desperately need in any event. My bet is the latter.
