  • Illinois to D1

According to a Tweet by Let's Play Hockey Jimmy John's founder Jimmy John Liautaud is considering funding the school's transition from club hockey to D1.

Jimmy John's is headquartered in Champaign, Ill., also the home of the University of Illinois. Liautaud is a native of Illinois.

The Illini have played in the ACHA national tournament in 13 of the past 15 years. Illinois won the national title in 2005.

I was curious to see if/when other B1G schools would start considering the transition as Penn St did.

What's the hockey culture like in Illinois/Champaign? Will there be community interest?

I don't know about Champaign, but Chicago has the world's most passionate hockey fans going on 4 years now.

Kidding aside, hope he decides to go for it.

As an Illini fan, I'm skeptical... I don't think they have an appropriate arena at this time and I don't think that the Assembly Hall Renovation plans include ice making... If this is true, it will be interesting to see how this plays out...

I had a friend play on their club team, not sure on community support but I know that the school itself has been very supportive and the club team is well organized.

How does that work under Title 9? When you add to the men's programs, do you have to add to the women's? Or is it overall scholarships?

                              (1) School is very supportive and the attendance is not horrible. Won the club national championship a few years ago and always have a competitive team.
                              (2) Rink is not large enough.
                              (3) Assembly Hall needs a lot more renovations than just adding ice.
