Guys,
I wanted to let you all know what a pleasure it has been covering the Saints for the last three seasons. Some of you may already know that I have accepted another job and will be leaving the Times in a little over a week.

I am departing to take a managerial position for 10 radio stations in and around Oneonta, NY. There, I will also be involved in covering Colgate hockey, sometimes even doing play-by-play on the radio. I will surely attend the games when St. Lawrence comes to town.

Covering the Saints has easily been the most enjoyable three years of my young career. I looked forward to hockey season almost as soon as it ended.

From head coach Joe Marsh to the assistants to the players and, of course, you the fans have made it an incredible experience. You’ve consistently motivated me to give you the best coverage possible. I hope you have enjoyed it as well.

When I got into this field, I envisioned getting to know players and coaches on a close to personal level and having full access to the team after games and during practices. St. Lawrence was more than accommodating and I hope I gave the readers everything they could have wanted in my coverage.

Personally, I could have only hoped to meet people of such high quality as Joe Marsh, Mike Hurlbut, Bob Prier and Greg Carvel. They are all everything you said they would be from the moment I started covering the team. St. Lawrence is a special place that I won’t ever forget.

I don’t know who will take over the beat next season or what will come of the blog that has already morphed from “Saints to the Max” to “Casstle of the Saints.” I hope they provide you with even better coverage.

I’ll have one more story, the usual season recap, running in the newspaper this Sunday.

After that, I will be delighted to sit back, follow the Saints as a fan, and finally be able to place on my car the “St. Lawrence University Hockey” license plate frame Chris Wells gave me on my first trip to Appleton Arena.

Dan

Dan........thanks for the great coverage and best of luck in your new position. You have made it especially easy for those of us from away to have a way to follow the team and get all the inside scoops. From "Getting to know a Saint" to all the highlights and interviews....they've really allowed those of us who don't have the opportunity to get to Canton often, to follow the team up close and personal. You added so many nice features from your Facebook posts and links to the footage of goals being scored. It all was much appreciated and well done.

As far as memories go my best one involving you would be the night of game three of the Clarkson playoff series in 2010 when Leckster and I were sitting in the Presidents Box with you right behind us in the booth. When the game ended we were high fiving, jumping and yelling with smiles a mile wide!!! Good times.

As to your new gig, when in Oneonta make sure to try the Turkey Reuben at Alfresco's and anything at Brooks Barbecue is great. Best of luck and if we get down to a game we will be sure to look you up!!! Thanks again for the great coverage!!

I also grew up near Oneonta, so am well versed in Brooks Chicken. Good stuff. I will plenty of it, again. I'll be around Colgate games for sure as one of the radio stations I'll be overseeing broadcasts Colgate hockey. Hope to see you there!

Dan,

Thanks for your incredible coverage of the Saints the past three years. Your top-notch coverage of the Saints made rooting from somewhat of a distance even more fun that it was before your coverage started. For me personally, many of your interviews were so good that it seemed like I was back managing the Team again. Great work!!

You will be missed by all that are associated with and/or follow SLU Hockey. Best of luck in your new endeavors.

Thanks again,
Brian

It was just about every week. The problem with doing a story like that is all the players and coaches are generally worried about the negative repercussions from talking about the officiating. Fines, suspensions and the like would hurt the team more than it would change officiating practices.

I will say I've never seen anyone react like Weninger did when Bob Ritchie called that third Dartmouth goal good on Saturday. I thought for sure he would get a penalty or something.

Yeah, I know that is the case. I think Drewiske said all that needed to be said in his last game to get the misconduct penalty. It was bad 25 years ago, but now it is just laughable. I thought Pierre Belanger or Gallagher were bad, but some of these guys are so bad I can't even think of the right words to describe them. Year in and year out, I love everything about ECAC hockey EXCEPT the officiating. It is bad enough when they make the wrong call, but when they fail to protect the players. I can't even fathom how those guys from Colgate went for Flanny's head clear as day and not only did they not get one of the calls on the ice correct, there was no supplemental discipline. Since when is Intent to Injure not a Game DQ? The angle that should be pursued in my opinion is to request a game tape from Cornell with the overhead camera and put the overhead camera on the blog so it becomes obvious to everyone there was no basis to disallow the goal that they did. Or put the clips on the blog of elbows to the head of players.

It is almost sad when you talk to hockey insiders, NHL GM's, Scouts, the 'greatest hockey mind in Canada' - Pierre McGuire or Scotty Bowman who used to take in games at Appleton on a regular basis and they all say the same thing..."how do you tolerate that officiating!"

I know I am a lot less tempted to drop $500 for a weekend of hockey when the officiating is so bad and so frustrating. It can be seen on the faces of the players and the coaches of both teams almost every night. Sad part is total incompetence has the consequence of ending or destroying dreams of players and stunting careers of coaches. The only funny part of it is that the coach with the most suspensions for bashing referees always gets the preferential calls at Cornell. I like Bob Gaudet at Dartmouth. I think he is a good guy even though I had a chirpfest with him when he was at Brown. I would love to have a microphone on him this weekend when they roll into Lynah and he has to watch all the picking and interference that Cornell commits as a result of the systems they employ on the ice.

Still, at the end of the day it is amazing that the same ref can be so inconsistent. We had Ritchie at Dartmouth a week earlier to the day. It was one of the best officiating jobs all season. One penalty the whole game, and he missed two very blatant calls against Dartmouth and probably one or two against us, but still it was about the best I had seen all season. Then the following week, he just makes the wrong call on that third goal, takes all the wind out of SLU's sails and completely shifts the momentum which was all SLU. And the week before that good game a week ago Saturday was Cornell where they made the right call on the ice and then they overturn with absolutely zero basis to do so. Absolutely incredibly sickeningly bad inconsistency.

There is good news in this though for you Dan. The lighting is so bad at Starr that you won't be able to see half of them!

Good luck again and drop in from time to time on the SLU threads.

It appears Robby Moss has signed an ATO with Las Vegas in the ECHL as well.

Also of note, it ends up I will be on my off time for a few weeks by the end of the month. It also happens that I was already planning to go to Tampa to search for houses once I got home. As such, I will be repping the Scarlet and Brown #15 at the Frozen Four this year once I get my ticket. Pretty excited to get a chance to finally get the Frozen Four experience crossed off my bucket list, funny how things like this work out.

I can't link to any articles, since I'm on my phone, but Joe Marsh has decided to step down and retire. Greg Carvel named head coach.

Can't say Carvel has big shoes to fill, because you just can't replace a coach like Joe. He was one of a kind, one of the best and molded countless young men into fine adults. Absolute best wishes to Joe in his retirement.

All the best to Coach Marsh. He's a legend, and will be missed all across the ECAC.

Guys,

Here's part of my story that will run in tomorrow's paper: http://watertowndailytimes.com/article/20120309/BLOGS05/120309872/-1/blogs05

I will have much more in the morning. I spoke with Marsh at length last night about a variety of things, including how he feels he will be remembered at SLU.

Best of luck to Joe in his retirement. I'll have more to say going forward, but right now will say that he has been an absolute legend as a Coach. And, on a personal level, he has been a huge inspiration to me and to my son over the years. The number of individuals that Joe has positively helped is endless, and that is his real legacy IMO.

St. Lawrence hockey is in a great place, and we all have a lot to look forward to for a long time - mainly thanks to Joe Marsh. But this is a sad day for SLU. There'll never be another Joe.

Best wishes to Coach Marsh on his retirement and to SLU hockey as it moves forward. I've never heard a bad thing about Marsh and his record speaks for itself.
