Three if you count Beau Bennett. Only one Mock Draft in the universe has Nick going in the first round and its USCHO. That being said, I'm very surprised how far he dropped out of favor since I felt he had a real solid Freshman season. Especially when you factor in how much Drew improved his Sophomore year.

That being said, the TSN guys will blow an aneurysm if Nick goes in the first round tonight. I'd estimate the odds at around 15-1. Pro scouts have him projected as a checking line forward.

I am indeed the one who has been in Alaska, although not actually northern Alaska, but I probably never said where geographically. I'm actually unemployed at the moment, although hopefully that situation will be rectified by fall. In any case, there is a good chance that next year I will at least be somewhere that has college hockey.

Look for Mayfield to be picked early today in the 2nd round.

Here is from his draft bio on NHL.com:

Mayfield has committed to the University of Denver for the fall of 2011 – “My dad went to law school in Denver. I remember when I was eight, nine years old we would go and visit (my dad’s friends) and they would take me to the rink. Walking around, just seeing how big it was, I've always wanted to play there. At Christmas when I was ten years old I got a Denver jersey. It's been hanging above my bed (since then) and just to commit there was amazing for me.”

So can we expect N. Shore to be picked in the 2nd round as well?

                          NHL Draft Wrap-Up for DU
Four University of Denver hockey players were selected in the NHL Draft on Saturday morning at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

                          2nd Round/ (#34) - Scott Mayfield D, New York Islanders
3rd Round (#82) - Nick Shore C, Los Angeles Kings
                          4th Round (#97) - Josiah Didier D, Montreal Canadiens
7th Round (#196) - Zac Larraza RW, Phoenix Coyotes

Mayfield and Shore were picked where they were projected. Didier moved up and Larraza moved down. All in all a good draft day for the DU boys.

All four DU player will be happy at the end of the day with the teams they were drafted by. Just as important, DU should be happy because the players are in good situations to develop in college.

I think the takeaway from the draft is that all four players need to make significant progress to make NHL rosters one day.

Didier is the guy who rose the most compared to his projected ranking. He might have the biggest upside five years down the road.

Oh yeah, that puts 3 DU players in the Isles system: Rakhshani, Donovan and Mayfield. Looks like Gregoire is going to be a free agent and not sign with the Isles. My guess is he tries to sign with his hometown Jets.

Yeah, given his track record, I would be surprised if Gregoire didn't sign with Winnipeg. I'll have to keep a good eye on Mayfield this year, and will probably get to see him quite a bit as I'm planning on getting student season tickets.
