Who will be next in line to join the Big Ten Hockey Conference? Will this lead to Notre Dame dropping independent status to finally join the Big Ten? Will Illinois or Indiana get enough balls to take the jump to varsity status? Any predictions?

(1) Until the other B1G schools see that ice hockey is a money maker, they'll stay out of it. A school needs a 5K capacity ice rink AND money for two programs (men and women).
(2) Unless E$PN and the BTN start generating (more) obscene cash flows for the B1G schools, they'll be stuck at 6 for the next 5+ years.
ND will join the B1G when the NBC contract stops paying off and there is a playoff system in the FBS schools.
Amazing how it is all tied to the money. And we thought it was education!CCT '77 & '78

The Tri-lams - because according to the bylaws any school that petitions can become a member on a trial basis (obscure Revenge of the Nerds reference there).Legally drunk???? If its "legal", what's the ------- problem?!? - George Carlin

no one. there is as much chance of the Big Ten adding a 7th team as David Stern allowing the worst basketball team ever, the Timberwolves, to win the draft lottery. it isn't going to happen.XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX
The reason for the talent in the west? Because MN didn't rely on Canada.

Illinois and Nebraska have already said they have no interest in adding hockey."The use of common sense and logic will not be tolerated and may result in fine and/or suspension."- Western Professional Hockey League By-laws. 1999-2000.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?
Will another Big 10 school add hockey at some point? Probably yes. However in the near future it would seem unlikely unless they have a crazy donation for a hockey program like Penn State did. The Big Advantage the Big 10 has and really any program in a BCS conference has right now is they are going to be getting more money flowing into their programs due to much larger TV contracts. This would make it easier for a school to bear some of the financial risks associated with a program. The most likely time for a school to add a hockey program is if they are either building a new arena or renovating their existing one and have a student and alumni population that really want a program similar to the Umass program in the early 90s. They had a major hockey conference that welcomed them in and are in a part of the country that loves hockey and the fans and alumni for that school wanted a program.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?
Many MANY moons until a current B1G school adds a shinny squad. However, I could see Notre Dame joining after their contact with NBC expires in 2015. The profitable B1G network will all of a sudden look very attractive. Another thing about ND is that beautiful rink they're building on campus will satisfy the B1G Syracuse is another. The B1G has had SU (among other schools) on its radar. SU just started a womens D1 program a year or two ago. Maybe converting the men's club team to D1 is in the future as well??
