Yale is the overall number one, Union makes their first appearance, Air Force and UMD are back for the second time in three years. Discuss.

I'm just trying to decide if this is the worst bracket of recent times or ever

I think Air Force will give Yale a game. Howver, unlike past year where the AHA rep has been overlooked, I don't think the Eli's will overlook the Falcons because Air Force defeated Yale earlier this year.

On the other hand, Air Force has confidence that they can beat Yale.

Eastern bias.

As a Bulldog fan I'm super pumped to be in this region looking at how we play teams from other conferences and Yale I don't believe is a very strong #1 seed but obviously not going to overlook anyone and like said before AHA is going to be a small sleeper here.

Anyone have a quick synopsis on Union? I missed their game against Bemidji in Minneapolis and I think the last time they played UMD was when both team were racing to see who could lose thirty the fastest.

Defense and the power play have carried them all year long. Keith Kinkaid won the league's top goaltender award (though the other two finalists were just as worthy) and their defense has been one of the best in the ECAC - just ask Cornell & Yale, especially. UMD's best bet to win is to stay out of the box, as Union's PP is clicking at 31%.

And AFA is a much, MUCH better team right now than they were when they played Yale. Air Force was 2-6 going into that Yale game and was struggling to find their game.

We all stink so bad that I think this thread is beneath your standards, please move on to a more deserving regional.

You have a good goaltender? you might be the only team in the region to have that :D

Is your PP inflated because of early games during the year?

I guess Yales Rondeau leading the country in GAA doesn't count for much? Just set the Yale team record for shut outs in a season, including three in the last three ECAC playoff games. Arguably the hottest tender entering the tourney. Kincaide is no slouch rated fourth in GAA.

We also have Yale leading the country in team offense AND defense, Union is second in team defense.

I think it will be a great regional.

Union has no glaring weakness and is strong throughout the line up on Defense, in goal and up front. As aweise indicated their PP is scoring at 31%. Their out of conference record is a mixed bag.......they beat up on the weaker teams, had some big wins but also lost quite a few of their games out of conference and were much better at home than on the road. They also are on a two game losing streak (getting bounced out of the ECAC playoffs in an upset by Colgate).

They had a lot of firsts this year......first Cleary Cup (finished 1st in Regular Season in ECAC) and this is their first ever NCAA D1 appearance. They dominated all the postseason ECAC awards with multiple players named to awards.
I think they are capable of beating any team in the country if they play well. On the other hand it's hockey and they could lose to anyone as well. I saw them play 3 times in person this year and they are just solid all around. Not flashy or speedy like Yale......they just grind it out and get the job done.

I wouldn't underestimate them........ They have been off for awhile now though not having played a game since 3/13.

Okay so its just UMD then. Cool.

I still had last years regional game against UND in my head.

the worst bracket ever was clarkson, st cloud, maine, and umass in 2007. of course the common theme is a crappy ezac team with a 1 seed.

UMD saves this years bracket as they are considerably better than SCSU was that year.

I posted this in the Yale thread, but might as well post it here, too, since it has to do with the first round matchup. Rather than bagging on whether this is a weak regional and whether "Ylae" is overrated, I'd rather say something about the AFA vs. Yale game, especially since there aren't many on this board who know much about AFA:

Should be a very interesting rematch with Air Force. When they played earlier, AFA was really struggling to find their way, and that win gave them a huge building block for what ended up being an unexpectedly strong season. Freshman Goaltender Jason Torf had his first career start in that game and for the most part has been unbelievable in goal ever since. Jacques Lamoureax has scored in eight straight games and could be a top one or two line player on any team. The blue liners Tim Kirby and Scott Mathis have been outstanding and also bring a bit of offense into the equation, especially on the PP. Air Force is fast, deep, and will outwork every opponent they play, which is why they win. In terms of weaknesses, the biggest one for AFA is their PK, which is only 77%. If Yale can force AFA into some penalties, it could be a rough night for AFA. That said, AFA plays very disciplined hockey, so they won't often take ill advised penalties. Yale will need to earn those, rather than relying on the Falcons to do something stupid.

Yale is better overall in terms of skill and talent, and if they can match the intensity that AFA plays with for 60 minutes, they are likely to win. That, however, is a tall task, and makes AFA a really tough team to play against in a one and done scenario. I was at the AFA vs. Yale game this year, and Yale looked a bit worn down by the third period while AFA still looked fresh. Air Force kept attacking while Yale became somewhat passive, and that also caused Yale to take some penalties in the 3rd period that they would not normally take.

This should be a great game!
