I'm sure. Whenever the discussion turns to rating the best coaches (or programs) in college hockey, I often think about him quietly going about his business of making the most important position on the ice great year after year and the effect that can have on a head coach's job and the team's success.

Ha Ha ha. Just like the old man in the Mighty Ducks, right?

He was a treasure, but he was far from quiet. I LOVED listening to him on the broadcasts. Told it like we were all seeing it.

"and here we go...look at this...look at this pb, the refs were looking the other way all game long and now we got this. unbelievable. you wanna tell me why that wasn't a 5 and a game?"

I really MISS Howie in the booth.

You captured that perfectly, I heard him saying it in my head as I read it. I'm seriously a little teary eyed, it makes me think back to growing up watching UW play a fuzzy black and white tv with the old rabbit ears.

Goody came along way, too bad he wasn't just a tad bigger. Having Sanger coaching hopefully for the forseeable future will add stability that was missing when Howie left. I think Eaves has a good eye for talent in a goalie. He thought he whiffed on Crandall, but he had decent numbers last year as a Fr. and probably will only get better. Rumpel is an elite recruit.

I don't think you'll find a Badger fan on these boards who wouldn't give the shirt off their back to have Howie back.

Not true, I wouldn't give my shirt to have Howie back. My reason is not for dislike of Howie, he was the man and churned out stud after stud.

I look at this as a realist. Howie talked about retirement for awhile, he was going to retire at some point. If he hadn't retired then, it was just a formality that he was going to in the near future. So the program was going to go through the pain of replacing a legend, and the Badgers are working through that right now. Him retired 2 years or 4 years later only would have put off the unevitable, and I think Eaves has a good thing going w/ Sanger right now. Sure he might never be Howie, but he doesn't have to be, he just needs to get the job done at a high level.

The only constant in life is change, and the Badger Hockey program is no different. In the ideal world it would have been great if he coached until they had to admit him to the old folks home (Penn State football style), but the reality is he is gone, and the program needs to move on, and we as fans need to appreciate how good we had it for all those years and championships.

I really miss him on the re-broadcasts...I'm going to put $1 on the tv this year each time UW needs to get a goal!

Me thinks that Brendan's season will be getting off to a delayed start. I'm also thinking that a pound of flesh may be extracted at a later date.

Coincidence that Ben Smith (the victim) went to BC?

Interesting situation for Brendan. He is not likely to make the Wings roster initially. He should make it to the show later this season. Until then, any possible suspension will be delayed until he gets to the D. Also, one of his idol's is Shanny.

Yeah, he's going to get at least five games. I mentioned on twitter earlier today that it's interesting since not only is Shannahan a former Wings player but he's also from Smiths home town and they know each other.

this is too bad...I love Brendan Smith as a player but gd get your head together. What's it going to take for these guys to learn and eliminate these types of hits? I watched this several times on replay and Babcock's explanation/defense doesn't hold water.

Speaking of former Badgers in the pros...errr...maybe not, Kyle Turris seems to be taking poor advice again. Contract holdout that seems to be headed for the long haul. Kyle wants 3-4 million per and the Yotes are telling him to go scratch as that kind of coin is for guys that have put up 60 points in the NHL and not guys that have a career high of 25 points. That is a kid that should have stayed in school another year or even two.

Yeah, if that's what he's up to, they'll rightly tell him to pound sand.

Theory that Turris may want out of the desert all together and that the contract demands might be a more subtle way of going about that then coming out and demanding a trade. Regardless, him making anything close to 3 much less 4 million per season based on what he has actually accomplished as a pro would be a joke. I still think he has a fair ammount of potential and is certainly young enough to reach that...but a peak of 25 points coming off the entry level contract does not translate into the pay day Turris is seeking. He would be smart to take 1.5-2 million and go out and prove his value with some actual NHL level production and cash in next Summer.

Brendan Smith has apparently been give the rest of the preseason off and 5 regular season games to feel shame for his hit on Ben Smith.

Turris's agent has said the reports of him asking for 3-4 million weren't accurate.

Same agent said reports of Doughty wanting 7 per was not accurate...low and behold...he signed for 7 per for 8 years. Phoenix management has basically told Turris to f off which I doubt they would do if he was asking in the 1.5 to 2 million range he should be. Me thinks Mr agent gave some bad advice and has a client sitting at home and now is in full spin control mode as Turris at even 3 million per is comical.

I actually agree with his holdout. It's not about the money, it's about being traded, which needs to happen. Turris was 4th on the team in points per minute played last season. However Tippet never played him, hew as averaging less than 10 minutes a night. It was clear to me watching their playoff games that he was one of, if not the biggest offensive threat they had. But he can only get on the ice 10 minutes a night? Trade him to a team that will play him.

Chuck...agree that Turris needs a different situation...a team willing to play him as a skilled top 6. He needs a situation where he is on the ice 15-17 minutes and has a chance to sink or swim rather then the 11:16 per game he got last season. With the acquasition of Langkow, his oppurtuntiy probably is less. All that said, if he wants a trade....he should just have his mouthpiece come out and request one instead of asking for stupid money.

totally agree with this...

I also think if he'd have stayed in madison through his Jr. season he would have come into the NHL and produced more than 25 points right out of the gate. probably more like 40-50

Baggot came out with a new article today conversing about line combinations. And here they are.

Mersch-Zengerle-Barnes
Labate-Lee-Paape
Navin-Dahl-R.Little
Clark-Meuer-Hartzog
Woods-Lapic-S.Little

Schultz-McCabe
Ramage-Daly
Faust-Simonelli
Springer-Drake

And in goal he mentions it's a toss up between Peterson and Rumpel stating Peterson shows more maturity.

I like the top 2 pairings at forward but for the life of me is Jason Clark really unable to elevate his practice to get up on the top 3 lines? Woods?

also.....ouch for scoring. This might be a very trying year unless Mersch-Zengerle-Barnes can produce 35-40 pts each, and maybe guys like Lee, Paape, Labate, Navin can somehow produce 20-25
