Regarding Atkinson signing with Columbus - I never saw this coming. Maybe Hayes or Kreider, but not Cam. Guess I wasn't sure about his size at NHL level, Gerbe's success notwithstanding, and being such a late draft pick figured wouldn't be getting much pressure from Columbus to sign. That's a brutal blow for next year, ESPECIALLY if Kreider and Hayes follow.

The thing is it's not like cam was still growing physically. He's done all you can do at this level. With his linemates graduating, no brainer for him to move on as well.

On paper, the defense should be this team's strength next year. IF they don't develop as a unit into the team's top assset, then we could be looking at a 2002 or 2009 type season.

I am luke warm on this decision. If you compare Jimmy Hayes to Brian Boyle, it doesn't make a lot of sense. In my opinion, he needed another year to dominate college hockey, and allow his speed, agility and skills to catch up with his size. Jimmy Hayes is no where near the impact player Boyle was when he left college hockey, so it will take him that much longer. I wish him the best and hope he proves me wrong, but I don't see him playing a regular shift in the NHL for another three to four years.

I posted this on the Alum Update as well, but felt the added exposure was necessary. Great to see two former Eagles up for AHL "Man of the Year" award. Not enough can ever be said about the positive effect Jerry York and staff have on these kids. Not only are they producing winners and champions, but they are also molding young men into model citizens.

I see what you're saying. But I still look at this and see 3 reliable defensemen and a bunch of question marks. Samuelsson's horrendous play from the Beanpot through the end of the year was simply mind-bogglingly bad. We'll see what they do with this defense - even personnel decisions will be interesting. Maybe move up Alber to forward and use him if you get 2 injuries (or roll 5) and bring in Matheson and rotate the last 4 guys in every game to keep guys fresh and keep everyone happy with quality PT?

Macleod absolutely needs to get stronger this summer and be a factor regularly. If he isn't, BC is in trouble. Because I don't see Samuelsson getting much better. Or Shea. Or Alber.

Of course, it would be lovely if the coaching staff maybe showed them how to hit someone. It seems like they are being asked to NOT hit people judging from what I've seen of them systemically.

The coaching staff's ability to mold them into a reliable unit will be paramount as well.

I'm not worried about goaltending. Offense will obviously take a hit but Mullane, Almeida, Hayes, and Carey I think are going to improve on their numbers. Steven Whitney absolutely HAS to make the jump.

I can't believe we're talking about this right now. We should be talking about our plans for the FF. What a miserable mess that was on Fri night. Hahahaa.

From what I hear Matheson isn't coming till 2012. Which would make more sense when we lose Cross & most likely Dumoulin.

Agreed. I'm not riding off Alber though. I think he can give them what he did down the stretch as a freshman. Cross and Wey took steps forward this year and I would expect the same next year.

Regardless of +/- numbers, can we end the Shea/Samuelsson pairing? I've been questioning playing them together for a while now...I don't see how that benefits the team. Granted, it had no real impact on anything that happened during the course of the season, but it seems to me you'd pair them together only in games where you plan on playing your top four most the game.

Get these guys some confidence, split them up and pair them with someone else. At least try it. I just think the offense could take a while to gel and get rolling. With Milner not seeing much time this year and an unproven freshman coming in, I'm just looking for this experienced group on D to step up to the plate.

I don't see Vinny Saparoni listed on Heisenberg site for BC anymore? Has he changed his mind?

I don't see many real "elite" type forwards (i.e. 50+ points) on the team next year, but do feel that we could have several guys score 15 or more goals. That list would include (in order of likelyhood) Kreider, Carey, Arnold, Kevin Hayes, Almeida and possibly Steve Whitney. Who knows with the Freshmen, but if nothing else would expect both Straight and Tiefenwerth to be putting up some points by the second half of the season. Overall I see this is a pretty solid group, which of course includes two 1st rd NHL draft picks. In regards to the D, I think we have to look at last weekends game as an abberation, and consider the fact that virtually this same unit was able to shut down two high powered offenses in the 2010 FF. The talent is there, we just need a bit more grit and determination. In net, even if Billett isn't as advertised, Milner is certainly a legit D-1 goalie. Between the two of them, I would think we'll be alright. My guess is that we'll be fighting BU, UNH and possibley MC for the top spot in HE next year.

With some of the basketball players I've seen play for BC, Vinny must have really dug himself a huge hole.

Like you, I'd be pretty surprised if anyone put up 50 points next year or even scored 25 goals. I think we can look towards the Mullane/Kreider combination and say that in theory, they will lead the forwards in scoring. I'm looking at Kreider for around 18 goals, possibly leading the team. Preliminary goal predictions:

Kreider: 18
Carey: 16
Arnold: 14
Almeida: 13
Mullane: 12
Whitney: 10
Hayes: 10

These guys are gonne be the "big seven" for lack of a better term. If they can all score in this range, BC will still be in good shape. I've learned not to place expectations on any freshman--no matter the hype. The key will be finding two guys to round out the top three lines.

I think BC will still be an NCAA tourney team. That's all that matters...just get in. Hell, just look at Michigan and Notre Dame advancing to the FF after getting destroyed in the CCHA semifinals. UMD also lost to Bemidji at the Final Five.

According to Atkinson, he is a member of the Hobey Hat Trick which won't be officially announced until Thursday.
