Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!
Official attendance was 14093*. Official attendance at most Florida Marlins games is around 12,000, which is about 7,000 more than are ever usually there, so take an "official" headcount with about a few million grains of salt. I got a kick out of the way Gary Thorne referred to the Canadians rooting for the Fins on the NHL Network broadcast, as if it was a Canadian here and a Canadian there possibly pulling for Finland, as if they were simply lining up behind a woefully unprepared underdog against a much stronger and favored team. This is hardly a new phenomena for the Canadians, and it sounded to me like the Canadians were ALL rooting for Finland. Most of the people in HSBC appeared to be wearing Canada sweaters, and the crowd appeared to stand as one both times Finland scored, and competed well with the fog horn, while the horn was clearly louder than the crowd when the USA scored. The audience will be decidely in favor of the opponent for each of the USA games, if last night was any indication. Oh well, it isn't like the IIHF is going to hold this thing in Nashville any time soon. We won in a frightfully hostile arena last year. We can certainly do it again on our side of the border this time around.
*and not that anyone needs to believe my estimate, but counting crowds is a hobby and from the looks of the place, my guess was 9000 in the house for this game*
