  • Tribute to the UMD DECC - Old Maroon Loon Memories

In a tribute to the closing of the UMD DECC, here is some footage of UMD hockey in the early 80s. One of the most exciting times in UMD hockey history:

Probably more suited for tPB site. But cool stuff nonetheless. Jim Rich broadcasting back on KBJR with Jezerski. Loved the old Harbor City Oil commercial. Good times.

Those Harbor City oil commercials were classics.
How do they expect us to throw hotdogs at the gophers with that [Expletive deleted] net in front of us?

I loved the Loon back in the day. Great trip down memory lane, even for a DU fan.

Who isn't a closet Bulldog fan?

UMD is a very likeable program, and most fans around the league would likely list UMD as #2 after the team they follow. Why is that? Well, they are a branch-campus underdog program in terms of the Gophers' shadow. The Gophers have abundance in their favor, and it's very easy to like the little brother who does more with less. If the Gophers are white collar corporate, UMD is blue collar and gritty. UMD has been around as a WCHA member a lot longer than the other Minnesota schools, so there is a lot of UMD history to respect. They have not won enough hardware for arrogance to set in, but they win just often enough to have everyone's admiration.

Secondly, Mike Sertich, who built really built that program to have some glory years in the 80s, is one of the most likable people in the history of the sport. His personality gained him a ton of admiration around the country for his humor, his down-to-earth persona and his enthusiasm for the game still radiates and makes Duluth special. You don't get that warmth from other coaches now, who have become much more intense and guarded over the years, as more money and higher pressure to win have changed the vibe. Sertie represented a more approachable and fun time in sports - something we're missing now.

Then you have that UMD fan experience - the memories of the Loon, the steep seating at the DECC, the flag runners, the Penalty Box, the cheerleaders and the good band. And the for me, great memories of the Chinese Lantern, the best old-time WCHA drinking experience, long ago lost to fire. You fans up there live and die with the Dawgs, and that is something I wish we had more of here in Denver, where we are too spoiled with success, affluence and other winter entertainment options that true emotional bonding with our teams is far harder to generate.

What is the game winner against Wisconsin all about? That game looks like it was at Dane County so the actual game is escaping me. Could be the 6-5 OT winner in 1983?

Naw, I think this is great viewing for all WCHA fans. Sioux fans, UW fans, Gopher fans can see their teams, and everyone can see our beloved commissioner.

Are we really leaving the DECC? It's just now starting to sink in.

Take lots of pictures and buy a program. It will be fine; trust me.

Change is the only reliable thing in the Universe. Like it or not, things change. Will it be sad to leave the old building? Sure it will. Will we get over it? It will take time, but yes we will. In time the new building will have the same idiosyncrasies, character and rich history as the old building.

And if you think the team is fast now, just give them an extra ten feet of ice to work with.

Very few people like change. Just human nature.

I just hope that having a new arena will not screw with the postive mojo from tDECC. It stinks that it will take years for a new atmosphere to build but thats what has to happen.

Good point about having more ice. I hope they will make the best of it.

BTW awesome video. I wish there were more videos like this on youtube. Love seeing old school UMD stuff on there.

I think having a successful season will help with the atmosphere. Nothing gets the decibels up like winning.

When I arrived on campus in 2001, DHG had only been around for a couple of years and there were still only 20-30 students in the student section (and Penalty Box was not the official name yet). You guys have a major head start. The townies in Duluth have always been (and still are) very quiet, its all about the students and they're not going away any time soon.
