Unfortunately, hoops & pucks shat themselves.

Hawks up 4-0 though so the evening can be salvaged.

I don't know, I don't see it that way at all.

What I saw was us lose two tight games to the #1 team in the country. We were competitive in each and could have won them both.

We all knew coming into this season that this was a young team and most of us thought it was a rebuilding year.

What I'm seeing is a lot of raw talent that is going to be very good by next year at the latest. I haven't even given up on this season yet as that kind of talent can sometimes make up for a lack of experience.

Now if I saw a team of role players or a team that clearly didn't care, I'd be right there with you. I see a team with all the parts, but many of the parts are just a little green right now.

Long way to go yet and I actually really like a lot of what I'm seeing at this very early point in the development of this team.

To me, you can tell that this team has all the pieces in terms of skill, and talent, and desire needed to be a good to very good team, but lack the crucial ingredient of experence to be that team right now. That is no more apparent to me then in the defensive zone: so many UW players out of position and oppoents left unguarded in the defensive zone. very unlike what we have become accustomed to at UW. I don't know how much to heap on the goalies for the goals, but they didn't make any highlight real saves that they couldn't be expected to.

The bigger thing is that this team MUST get better a little each and every week, and the first place they need to show it is in the defensive zone, particularly around the net. To many players being allowed to roam free in front of the UW net.

It seems that this team really feels the loss of the three D from last year, one of those 3 stay, and I think that has a HUGE impact on this team and how they play.

Friday night the effort was uneven. UW looked pretty lazy out there in the first period until they scored, then they seemed to wake up. To start the 2nd period it was the same way. That was very frustrating (especially being there in person). They played great in the OT, UMD gets lucky on the non-call and scores. I was most upset about the first goal UW gave up. Zengerle threw the puck blindly up the boards, UMD has a guy right there, who Goody allows to score - 2 crap plays.

Saturday, they played a pretty solid game. UMD gets a lucky bounce in OT after some great pressure by UW and scores. Zengerle had a great chance in the 3rd period where he passed into the slot instead of shooting. Crandall's 5 hole was so wide open I could have scored on him.

UMD is the #1 team in the country, it wasn't like UW was hopelessly outclassed. UW really needed 1 lights out goaltending performace to get some points and they didn't get it.

5th place is still very attainable. The top 4 in the WCHA are pretty clear. The question is whether or not St. Cloud is going to wake up and get into a spot for home ice. After this weekend, the competition gets easier. A split this weekend is reasonable, then the next is should be a 6-2 run. I see a 13-9-2 record (6-6-2 WCHA) before the trip to UMD.

Back to the topic. Are you certain that "we honestly don't care" when your best players, recruited at considerable time and expense, depart long before their eligibility expires? Does the "we" you mention in your devil-may-care attitude toward early departure refer to all Badger fans, coaches, alumni, and the UW administration? Mike Eaves was scheduled to meet with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman 11/9 to discuss "player raids." Eaves is evidently not a "we."
If a kid has a chance to leave for the NHL and wants to, thats their choice. Its tough for them to pass up the big paycheck, so more power to 'em. I wouldnt say that we dont care, but is not as if these kids are obligated to stay at school for 4 years.
We enjoy our players while they are here and we wish them the best and cheer for them when they reach the NHL.
As to your little wisecrack about being jealous about UW if they were higher in the polls, I will say this: 6 national championships. UW's success is the envy of almost every other mens' hockey program in the NCAA. Theres a lot of other quality programs out there who havent won any NCAA championships and we have 6, so yeah, we have much to be proud of.

I agree- but would add they seem to stand around too much on the PP. Where Duluth was always moving. I am not sure if that is by design or not. Also the Badgers looked great 1st period, horrible 2nd, and better toward the end of the 3rd. Badgers had too many good chances of scoring but couldn't find a way to get the puck in the basket. The fact we played the #1 team in the nation and had a chance to win both games only tells me we are going to get better and like your 6-2 run idea.

So, I propose that we do away with overtime entirely, and hold shootouts after 60 minutes.

Pretty good effort tonight, but as others have posted, you can really see the inexperience. These guys will get to know each other and things will happen. There's too much talent there for it NOT to happen.

I watched my DVR replay this morning; why the hell does PB have to bring up that OT losing record? That's like saying "I hope our goalie gets a shut-out" with 2 minutes left in the game. PB used to be great at, "Hey folks, put a $5 bill on top of your TVs and let's buy a goal!" Of course my tongue is firmly planted in my cheek, but maybe we should do that "$5 on the TV" thing......can't hurt!!

I really didn't like the NHL way of giving a point for tying at the end of regulation, but over time I've really appreciated it more and more. It allows you to enjoy the outcome to some extent either way coz you can always say, "At least we got one point."

It's amazing how much difference that can make in what a fan takes away from the game. It rewards matching a team during regulation and makes that last minute goal to tie all the more worthwhile, even when you end up losing in OT.

I still don't care all that much for the shootout though to award an additional point in the standings and I wouldn't want to have that in College. Anyone remember the game a couple of years ago that went about 10 rounds before the first goal went in?

Friday night I would have thrown my wallet on the ice if it would have gaurenteed a goal in ot for UW. The ice cream wasn't so sweet with the loss either. I sat in the Culvers pouting slowly eating my ice cream while my wife and kids were merrily guzzling their's down. They just don't get it.

In case you are feeling optimistic, lucky or both - the Resch Center is putting the Midwest Regional tickets on sale to the public on Dec. 3 at 11 am Central. (www.ticketstaronline.com). Of course, no guarantees UW will end up here, but FYI.
