...It does seem like Neal has a lot more upside that Quinn would have, whose stocked seemed to have absolutely plummeted in everybody's mind (his Ontario Juniors coach, NHL scouts, college scouts, Montgomery) since 18 months ago.

This belongs on the Recruit thread, but what the heck...Neal is a forward and Quinn is a defenseman...apples and oranges. Not to backtrack, but I'm unaware of anyone publicly downgrading Quinn's game. The kid was caught in a front office cluster %$#@ in DBQ, or else he'd still be there. I personally think Quinn has a ton of upside - he is a VERY smooth skating, puck moving blueliner. That said, I think he belongs in the USHL and it remains to be seen if Quinn is ready for MJ's.

The kid was caught in a foreign player front office cluster %$#@ in DBQ, or else he'd still be there. I personally think Quinn has a ton of upside - he is a VERY smooth skating, puck moving blueliner. That said, I think he belongs in the USHL and it remains to be seen if Quinn is ready for MJ's.

I'm not trying to compare them directly. However, in trying to figure out whether we're better or worse off than we were 1 month ago it's necessary to try and come up with some vague system for doing so. Haggerty-D'Amigo was obvious (both were USNTDP players) and Laliberti-Pirri was obvious (both are lightweight players tearing up a pretty bad Junior A league). That left comparing Neal with Quinn. Not perfect but whatever.

Anyways, I agree I may have undersold Quinn a little bit. However, I got the sense that when we first got his commitment way back when he was looking like he'd move on to be a top USHL player for a year and be looking like a mid-round NHL draft pick. Now, neither of those things seems to be the case. As I just acknowledged, I probably was initially underselling Quinn a little bit.

Nevertheless, this is a lot like the debate/argument I had with someone several months ago about evaluating recruits. I felt like my position was pretty clear and obvious - we are working with highly imperfect and imprecise information and so any evaluation we undertake is far from scientific. But to just respond by saying "apples to oranges" doesn't add much to the discussion, in my opinion.

I guess I was a bit early comparing August and September since we got another commitment in September as I reported on the recruit thread. :o

It was the vagueness in your post that led me there...by saying a forward has "more upside" than a defensemen. By definition they have two different impacts on a recruiting class and a roster. If I misunderstood, my bad.

To imply Quinn is not in the USHL because his stock has dropped is plain wrong. The fact is, DBQ screwed up their foreign player status because they apparently don't know how to count to three (teams are limited to 2). At that late date, he found a spot in Des Moines, but ultimately he and his family chose to jump to MJs...which last time I checked, isn't exactly chopped liver hockey-wise.

I'm not happy that he decommitted and I do think it was the absolutely wrong move for him. But to muddy the kid up with unsubstantiated "his stock has dropped" statements is BS, IMO.

In any event, I wish him the best.

Fair enough. Before too long we'll have plenty of objective results (MJ performance, NHL draft) to get a better idea what we're missing out on. :)

Although Quinn will be eligible for next year's NHL draft, he was already eligible this year and was not selected.

Dale Watson '69 passed away last week according to this note by Ken Schott http://tinyurl.com/2usw9ws. :( :( :(

Those of us who were around at the time recall how he along with Richard Scammell and the rest of the class of 1969 led the resurgence of RPI hockey after the depths of 1966, culminating in the defeat of Cornell and Ken Dryden on December 4, 1968.

I do remember Dale Watson.

I don't remember hearing about the 1965-66 frosh vs. varsity game. I was still a senior in high school, and I guess the word about that game didn't get around outside the confines of the campus. I can well believe that Watson & Co. could have beaten that varsity decisively.

I can remember how Watson used to be able to score what the radio announcer described, for want of a better term, as "lazy goals." He would get the puck behind the net and circle out in front. If the goalie did not present an opening, he would simply continue the circle, at what seemed like almost a casual pace, back around behind the net, then back around in front to see if the opening was there this time. And if the opening was there, BINGO! All the time, the other team seemed powerless to knock the puck away from him. I can't recall ever seeing another player who could do this the way Watson could.

Sorry to hear of his passing.

Agreed. As I said before, I think/thought his move to the O was a mistake...time will tell.

IMHO, of the three players whom we lost, JD'A makes the most sense, Quinn the least, and Pirri is in between.

Really? Because it's almost like we mentioned this... in this thread... more than a month ago!

BTW... there will still be three "As" this season, and perhaps they should be the "Eh" Team now... Jeff Foss makes three Minnesotans as assistant captains.

I would like to take this moment to honor Bryan and all of those players who have come before him during RB's nearly 7 month (?) off-season countdown.:p Yes, this was a shameless attempt at helping to kill this thread...

2 TH pieces on DBQ's return to the USHL.

Lookback piece on DBQ's hockey history

Season preview mentions 10 DI commits, with Monty saying he expects "...5 or 6 more commitments by Christmastime...We have some extremely talented hockey players in our dressing room who are either undecided or haven't yet had the kind of exposure you get in the USHL."

Clearly, our off-season was too long this past season if you can't remember how long it was. Just kidding, but for real, the off-season was too long.

He's right on http://board.uscho.com/showpost.php?p=4678845&postcount=1. It was March 7.

I have a new thread ready when this one is closed.
