I think that is a quality hire. He's going to have to work extra hard to recruit to that program though, as any local talent is naturally going to be drawn south.

Outstanding hire! His first task is to get BG competitive with the Alaskas, NMUs and Ferris States on a regular basis and move on from there.

          Interesting pick....

Last summer, during the great "will BG have hockey next season?" controversy, I heard that the BG administration spent a fair amount of time discussing the "Miami Model." Maybe that was a factor in their selection.

Wonder what some of the BG posters (BGBill, Falcon Fanatic, et. al.) will have to say.

Good luck to the new coach, and to the Falcons as well!

Because those 3 are examples of second tier teams????

              baby steps.

Besides, all of them make the top 4 reasonably often. Solid programs with solid fan bases who are not going away.

Seems like a good hire. He spent time playing in Toledo, and being a CCHA guy IN OHIO really pushes the recruiting rivalry up.

Over the LONG run, BG does have a more significant history, too.

I'm a little disappointed that they didn't give the interim coach another chance since the university almost destroyed any chance he had with recruiting with all their "we might drop the program" crap. I think they made a good hire. Once we ge the renovations done to the Ice Arena it should make recruiting a little easier.

BGSU is in the same boat as WMU. Being a second rate team is a huge step up. Granted goals should ultimately be much higher, but you need to have realistic interim goals along the way. Besides, tOSU isn't in much better shape themselves.

At least BGSU and WMU snapped up current and former Miami assistants, respectively. There's nothing left for OSU!
Love and honor to Miami forever and a day. Go RedHawks!

We've been over this, tOSU does not hire Miami assistants.

I have mixed feelings. Dennis Williams, IMO, did a heck of a job this last year given the situation. By all accounts, we have a better recruiting class coming in then we've had in a long time. While the wins didn't come, the team played hard game in and game out which is something we couldn't honestly say in the past. Given his and the program's situation, that says a great deal about the hard work he and his assitants have put in this past year. I honestly belive that Dennis should have been given the reigns for the next few years to prove that he has what it takes to coach at this level. Maybe not the 6 year contract they gave Bergeron, but at least 3 more years. Enough time to bring in all of his own recruits.

On the other hand, I'm excited for the future. The ice arena is getting much needed renovations, and the endowments are starting to come in which means security for the program for the foreseeable future. As for Bergeron, he has certainly said all of the right things, thus far, and he comes in with great credentials. I guess time will tell if he can turn his words and credentials into a winning program.

One of which has done a pretty good job at the reigns of the Pittsburgh Penguins. If we could only get him interested in coaching at the college level...
