Geoffrion becomes Badgers' first Hobey Baker winner

DETROIT -- The University of Wisconsin men's hockey program has produced 64 NHL players, 33 All-Americans and 21 Olympians, along with six national championships.

But no Badger had ever won the Hobey Baker Award, college hockey's version of the Heisman Trophy, since its inception in 1981.

Until Friday, that is.

UW forward Blake Geoffrion, who declined overtures from the NHL to return for his senior season, captured the top individual honor in the game Friday night in a ceremony at Ford Field that was broadcast on ESPNU.

Geoffrion has scored 28 goals -- including 15 on the power-play -- and amassed 50 points for the Badgers, who will face Boston College for the NCAA title on Saturday night.

He edged two other candidates for the honor: Maine's Gustav Nyquist and New Hampshire's Billy Butler.

For more on this historic achievement -- including photos and a video interview with Geoffrion -- visit Madison.com sports throughout the evening and pick up Saturday's edition of the Wisconsin State Journal.

Ha ha...

It was written in a way that it shouldn't have been released until tomorrow.

Sooo....someone may have made a huge mistake. We will see how fast they remove the article from the website.

Hope this is Dewey beats Truman.

Really like Geoffrion as a player every time I have seen him.

I just think both Butler and Nyquist have done more (see numbers) with far less help. Admitted eastern bias.

P.S. I think Geoffrion is going to be the better Pro but I think the other two were better college players this year.

This reads to me more like a placeholder article than an article written with inside info, if that makes any sense.

They didn't respond?

I've been trying to read your comment (their site says there's 1 comment posted), but I can't get at it. Now they're suppressing the news!

My favorite part: "Posted in Hockey on Friday, April 9, 2010 6:00 pm Blake Geoffrion, Uw Men's Hockey, Badgers, Hobey Baker Award, Gustav Nyquist, Billy Butler, Maine Black Bears."

The doubles-hitting first baseman of the Kansas City Royals? He must be the Bo Jackson of hockey!

Darn, you beat me to it by a minute
