Well, the Village of Seneca Falls voted to dissolve. At least the town was also called Seneca Falls, because it would be a shame for such a famous and historic name to disappear.

The Village of Brockport is in the Town of Sweden, so if it dissolves, it becomes Sweden. There will no longer be a 10-minute drive.

Actually, 37 New York communities have decided that an incorporated village is not an efficient form of government (for them & usually due to small size) and have chosen to dissolve them. Pike, NY officially dissolved on Dec. 31, 2009.

Apparently it can be a lucrative route as well: in Plattsburgh's neck of the woods, the Village of Port Henry voted not to dissolve into the Town of Moriah on what appear to be entirely identity-motivated grounds, as municipal taxes could have dropped by up to a third. Of course, that article mentions state aid specially earmarked for dissolving muncipalities, so there's an air of the cash-grabby about the whole thing that seems to go beyond valid logistical concerns for such action (whatever those might be).

Why dissolve it when you can sell it?

Over the past few years many villages have disolved their government and have become just a Hamlet in the Township. Port Henry, NY just tried, but it was voted down. Lake George disolved the village several years ago, which meant no more police department. That is why the Warren County Sherrifs Dept now patrols Lake George.

Brockport would more than likely remain a Hamlet with no government, as have many before them. There are many in Clinton county. Peru, AuSable Forks (which is also part of two townships covering two counties), Mooers, Mooers Forks, Ellenburg, and all of its namesakes just to name a few.

If Peru is a hamlet with no government, somebody wasted some of my time on the ballot this past October (okay, I never voted... registered as an absentee voter, but never received my absentee ballot But there most certainly is a town government in Peru!)

And with the village with no government that straddles the county border and therefore sits in two towns... Keeseville fits that bill as well (and happens to sit in Ausable... not to be confused with Ausable Forks!)

That would be the Town of Peru, not the village. There is no village.

That sounds as confusing as Vermont, where we have Northfield Town, which includes Northfield Village, but there are two governments, but which have the same municipal manager, and Barre Town, which does not include Barre City, and Essex Junction, which is included in the Town of Essex, but is somewhat like Northfield Village and Northfield Town, and then there is St. Albans City and St. Albans Town, and for anybody who didn't grow up in Vermont, and has only lived here for 30 years it gets really confusing.
