And a little ad for Rockybilt (which was located on the north side of Evans, just a couple of doors west from what used to be University Park Pharmacy on the corner). Rockybilt burgers featured a sauce that would gag a gut wagon dog.

Was that the place that was a free-standing building just west of the pharmacy that kind of looked like a shack/log cabin? Looked pretty gruesome. It was torn down the first year I was there.

We used to order a lot of pizzas for delivery from Scotty's which was on the south side of Evans just west of campus.

Bennett, Shore and Brittain signed their LOIs.

That sounds right. Very small place, very small. But open late for drunk/stoned DU students to get their fix of rocky sauce. Bleh. The grill was located in the front window (evidently they weren't worried about passersby calling the cops). There was a Chicken Delight on the east side of Colorado Blvd a little north of Evans. IIRC, they delivered, so that put 'em near the top of everybody's list. Did he say Chicken Delight? Wow, I read about them in history class. The deli in the bowling alley had pretty good heroes. And there was an Italian place adjacent to the aformentioned Chicken Delight--Caninos?

The deli in the bowling alley had pretty good heroes.

If I recall correctly, the bowling alley was in the same space that The Border is now located. It had manual pin setters (DU students who worked there).

Green Bay wins Clark Cup (USHL championship) 5-3 behind incoming recruit David Makowski's 3 assists. Incoming recruit Garrett Allen had Fargo's first goal of the evening.

Interesting piece of DU memorabilia for sale on Ebay:

DU/CC program from 1960-61, the year DU went 30-1-1 and won the NCAA title in what many believe is the most dominant college hockey team ever assembled.

The e-bay listing has 11 screen shots from the program that are worth looking at....including an ad for the Campus Lounge and McDonald's 15 cent hamburgers.

If the Bowling Alley was Varsity Lanes, that disappeared in the early 80s s when the current Walgreens went up in that location, just South of the DU Shoppette where the Border is...

The Shore parents met at DU law school, so presumably, they value education and they value DU and and they probably aren't financially hurting, so I can see why Nick signed with DU and not a CHL team.

Still skating:

AHL

Brock Trotter 5-5-10 +5 Hamilton Bulldogs (Hamilton is missing 3 of their best players because the Habs keep winning  )

Gabe Gauthier 4-3-7 +2 Manchester Monarchs

NHL

Matt Carle 0-7-7 +6

Would you believe the Flyers could win 3 straight to force Game 7? Can they win 4 in a row?

Yes, I Believe!
Flyers down 3-0 in series
Flyers down 3-0 in game 7
Flyers win game 7 4-3
Flyers win series 4-3
And Matt Carle was there! No points, but +1 for the night. 0-7-7 +7

BTW make that 7-5-12 +6 for Brock Trotter. Scored the winning goal 14 seconds into OT. His second goal of the game.

I've told the story many times about the night we beat Marquette with Dean "the dream" Meminger. We got 'em the night AFTER they'd been selected for the tournament and they weren't as uh, sharp as you might expect. I remember Al McGuire 'phoning it in from the bench, really hammered 'em. We used to play BYU and New Mexico and other pretty good teams. With massive crowds of 1200 fans in attendance. Some things never change.

And yeah, the bowling alley was where Walgreen's now is. They had a top of the line sandwich with ham, turkey and roast beef that was quite tasty.

I took Bowling there winter quarter for part of my PE requirement, Think everybody who showed up got an A or B :p
They also had a great Reuben at the deli there--used pastrami instead of corned beef--yum.

DU men's tennis lost to Michigan today in the NCAA tourney, 4-1. The Pios were ranked #36 nationally, Michigan #26 nationally. DU finished 19-5, with wins over Nebraska, Arizona and Iowa, among others. Another very good season by a Pioneer team.

It was a good game, but DU got pounded on faceoffs, 19-7 and that was really the difference in the game. Great season for the Pios - no one expected them to make the tourney in Tierney's first year, before he'd had a chance to recruit. The next few years, as Tierney gets his recruits into the school, I expect DU will begin to rise as a powerhouse.

I was at the game. We easily could have won. Stony Brook goalie came up with huge saves in the 2nd half. I believe even the Stony Brook fans were surprised by his performance.
We played pretty well. Our goalie kept us in the game in the 1st half. We make unforced turnovers way too often. We won first 2 face-offs and then not that many after that, though I think the 19-7 count is home team scorekeeping. (actually there were only 19 total face-offs in the game; after each goal and to start 3 periods) A penalty carried over between 3rd and fourth periods, so no face off was necessry.
Great DU fan attendence. Some young alums from NYC took th LIRR to the game. (that's the train) We made enough noise to be a factor.
I detest losing in the first round of NCAA Hockey and Lacrosse. The "finality" of it all is very draining. However as Swami correctly points out, our future is very bright. Within the next 3 years, we will be playing Memorial Day weekend.

My Freshman year, we were 2-22, but lost to tournament bound Marquette by 2 points. They had 2 pros, George Thompson and "The Dream". Thompson was 6'2" and had 25 rebounds. (some kind of record against DU at the time)
Best attended game came in 1971. We had a 12 game winning streak and we were playing a ranked Utah State team with Marv Roberts and some other pro on the team. (we beat #7 Oregon during the streak) We won handily. Even all the Hippies showed up for the game. I remember a picture of Howie Benario hanging from the rafters. However, in out last game of the year, we lost at Loyola of Chicago 54-52 to lose our chance for an N.I.T. bid.

Thanks Viz for these updates. It's so great to see Matt Carle out there! I never thought I would rout for the Flyers under any circumstances. He's getting so much national recognition. Interesting to see Trotter doing so well, I wonder if we'll ever find out what happened there  ? On another note, this could be the week we hear about captains, something to look forward to

Finally, this is post #790 on this doomed thread. We got to close this out. Come on people, let's talk DU hockey, past, present, future!!
