Wow, call me surprised...Do we believe the Newspaper or the TV station?

Frankly, given the almost total lack of coverage of hockey in the Columbus area by both print and broadcast media (not to mention the exceptionally poor depth and quality of what little there is) , I am more inclined to believe Gwoz's home town paper than a local TV outlet here in C'bus. Western invited several head coaches to Kalamazoo to consult on their opening. Not so surprising (and rather encouraging) to hear tOSU is doing the same, though I had hoped he was a bona fide candidate...

Mike Chambers of the Denver Post exclusively covers the DU hockey team. If he says he called Gwoz and got that answer, I would put 100% faith in his report. Since Gwoz has coached at DU he has turned down both the Michigan State and Wisconsin head coaching jobs, slightly more prestigious jobs than the OSU job. I highly doubt he could be enticed to take the OSU job. If Gwoz ever makes a move from DU, I would speculate it would be to the NHL where he would minimally be paid at least $1 million a year. He is likely to sign a renegotiation and extension at DU soon for well north of $300,000 per year (probably close to $350,000) and with his hockey camp and other outside contracts he will be making at least half a million at DU. He is the big dog at DU and is not in the shadow of any other teams.

My source is 10 TV news Wall to Wall coverage. They named the candidates the other night...I think it was Saturday night after they covered a boxing match, OSU football and the Blue Jackets. It might be available on their website.

So did Wall to Wall actually state that those candidates had been interviewed, were scheduled for interviews or were they merely speculating on who might be in the mix, just like those on this board? Who were the other candidates they mentioned?

As for believing the newspaper or TV, having been around college hockey a long time, and being quite familiar with its media, I'll definitely take the work of Mike Chambers at face value.

Although the 10TV story wasnt available online, my guess is that it was speculative, much like the stories of who they think the Browns or Bengals might take in the first round, if they actually got the interview list from the athletic department, they are the only media outlet of any form to actually see it.

Wall to Wall Sports named Osiecki, Jones, Pooley, Gwozdecky and Cav. They didn't say anything about interviews, they just stated they were the five candidates. If they are the five finalists, OSU missed the boat on several good ones.

Who did they miss the boat on? Looks like some good coaches in the mix there.

Not saying they're available, but off the top of my head I might have expected to see one (or more) of these mentioned...

Jon Cooper
Nate Leaman (Union)
David Quinn (former BU asst, now head coach at Lake Erie-AHL)
Tom Serratore (Bemidji)
Kevin Sneddon (UVM)

All of those guys have been mentioned in this thread. No one has been mentioned by anyone at OSU. I wouldn't bank on any decisions being made by the end of this week, as all coaches will be in Florida for the coaches convention. I would hazard a guess that those who have already been interviewed (if any have been interviewed) are simply a gathering of information at this point. I would imagine that more contacts will be made and interviews, formal or informal will be conducted at the convention.

UMM. The people that are finalist are better coaches than most of these guys. So I dont think they missed the boat on anyone. And I think OSU has interviewed or is interviewing this week. So I expect them to have hired someone before or during the Florida meetings.

Seeing as how Gwoz has already stated he is not a candidate, I think we can question the accuracy of the rest of W2W's list ...sounds like they didn't print anything but their own WAG.

Am not saying Osiecki, Jones or Cavanough won't make good head coaches, but we just don't know. I think this school deserves a proven winner. Jon Cooper wins, Dave Smith wins. I think they should talk with Dallas Ferguson. He has done a quick turn around in two years at Alaska.

I was at the Chiller-north today, guy who works there claims Casey Jones had an interview about 10 days ago.

Everyone knew from Day 1 of the coaching search Kelly was going to ND, he would have been a fool not to. Just like Gwoz would be a fool to leave DU for OSU, not a slight on OSU it just is what it is.

Gotta' agree with that. Huge difference between moving to Notre Dame to coach football and moving to OSU to coach hockey.

UMM. The people that are finalist [sic] are better coaches than most of these guys.

That, as they say, is debatable. ;)

And not really my point.

It just struck me that the earlier list had only one active D-1 coach (Gwoz) and one former D-1 head coach (Pooley). Twisted Wrister has added a few additional active coaches (Smith and Ferguson) to my earlier comment as well.

The better/same/worse question is a conjectural one, of course. But it does make me wonder if the search is focusing more on assistant coaches over head coaches. Or are the head coaches that we've bandied about on this thread saying, "thanks, but no thanks?"

CHN: Ohio State Down to Three (http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2010/04/21_ohiostate.php)

Those interviewed include three current Division I assistants Mark Osiecki of Wisconsin, Casey Jones of Cornell (an assistant at Ohio State under John Markell for 13 seasons before departing for his alma mater two years ago), and Boston College assistant Mike Cavanaugh.

CHN: Ohio State Down to Three (http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2010/04/21_ohiostate.php)I can't believe Gwozdecky didn't make the final three. His stock must really be falling. :D

You can pretty much bet that Osiecki is going to get the job and is going to do a great job.

Osiecki would be the wise choice. He's been a head man before. He's the best defensive coach in the country, IMHO. And he has Big 10 street cred with a program that's won national titles.

All I'm saying is that there are a lot of reasons why a coach might move schools - family, new challenge, future of the Big Ten...Just looking at money and program committment may not be telling the whole story. For example, he has history with the BT - playing at Wisconsin and coaching at Michigan State. Maybe he sees OSU as the sleeping giant it should be and wants to elevate the program - make his mark. Maybe his daughter is looking to go to school and play for a Div. 1 program (does DU have a women's team)?

That said, I have NOTHING that tells me that he is interested and not just consulting as he claims, but something just doesn't smell right with this whole secrecy and schedule. Wouldn't they want a consultant to help the interview process? That would mean he should be here this week. Why would OSU choose him and not other CCHA or Big Ten coaches that know the job and the league better? Why wouldn't they pick someone more local and able to get here quickly or someone who understands the OSU recruiting base? I don't think he has any ties to the OSU athletic department that would make them reach out to him over others so it doesn't exactly fit. Why would OSU not interview ANY other head coaches? We know some others surely applied.

This is all conjecture so flame away...I'm just saying that stranger things have happened so don't discount the possibility that he is actually interested. What would you tell the reporter that found out you're talking to OSU and asks if you're leaving before you have even interviewed? Besides, until they announce on Friday or Saturday I'm bored and this is fun!:D
