And this was the first week that we've had a lot of nominations since adopting the 5-player poll policy, so here it is. If you don't think my reasoning is sound, please tell me so we can discuss it, so that I might make better-reasoned decisions in future polls.
Rationale for removals:
Kory Grahl: While he did indeed put up 7 points in 2 games, the strongest opponent faced this week was Curry, when he put up only 1 point, and they lost. He also had no scoring in a third game during the week, which must also be included on his résumé. 7 points is impressive, but 2.3 p/g against those opponents does not stack up well against some of the other nominees.
Zach Hansen: 80 saves is impressive. But I also have to look at the opponents, and only getting ties (although the ties cannot entirely be blamed on the goalie) against those opponents does not compare well with the results the other goalies got, or the teams they put up their numbers against.
John LaRose: Pitching a shutout against an ECAC-W opponent that has tended to hover around the bubble of the USCHO poll generally gets you nominations for player of the week. Manhattanville is 2nd place in the ECAC-W, has been scoring 3 or 4 goals on average in the conference for quite some time. However, the guy on the other end of the ice did much the same thing that night, yet he didn't get a nomination. The percieved difference was the fact that LaRose did so much of it while shorthanded, and Manhattanville's PP of 22% is respectable. But the reality is that Mahattanville's PP has only been clicking at 16% this semester, and was 2-14 in the two previous games. Don't get me wrong, Mahattanville is a good team, and what Larose did was impressive. But a faltering Manhattanville PP means that it was not quite as impressive as some of the other nominees. This was a tough one to remove, and I had to look really far into the numbers to make a decision on it.
David Martinson: I have one thing to say, and it will sum up the entire decision to not include him in the poll: Concordia Mn.
Kyle Kurr: This was the last person out. It came down to Kurr, Smigelski, and Calleja. All 3 faced respectable, if not great, opposition, and put up very similar numbers. What it came down to in this instance was the fact that Smigelski got the GWG to end Norwich's undefeated season, and Calleja got a short-handed goal, whereas Kurr did nothing of the sort.
Congratulations to all of the above-listed players who did not make this week's Poll. Their weeks were still impressive, and showed hard work, dedication, and the will to win. Best of luck down the stretch!
