  • Catamount Cup: Vermont, tUMD, Mercyhurst and UAH

Don't think there's a thread started for this one, so here we go:

tUMD: Playing well, took 4 of 6 the last three weekends of the first half vs. Minnesota, NoDak and Denver.

Vermont also stole our AD a couple years back. Which is OK. You can keep him.

    Thoughts on the weekend?

Ahh nice. My UMD history has major holes in it.

Any Vermont fans going to post? Tell us about your team.

Positive? Negatives? Hockey East hopes? NCAA hopes?

Positives - an over .500 record at 8-6-2 despite playing like an under-achieving team. Currently 5-1 in out of conference play. 2 wins this weekend will go a long way to helping the Pairwise ratings at the end of year. Good wins against Denver (#2 in current rankings), Boston College (#5 - won season series with 2 wins in 3 game series). A win against a Duluth team currently ranked at #12 that has good wins over Colorado College, North Dakota and Denver would be helpful for this team.

Team started out well with opening games vs.Denver and Boston College, then went on to a series of one game per weekend schedule that did not look good. They struggled pretty much in every phase of the game...PP, PK and goalie rotation. I believe they are still struggling but have a 4-1-1 record in past 6 games. They are winning in spite of the lack of consistency.

Negatives - team has played 3 of their 16 games in the 1st half in which the coaching staff says they have played a full 60 minutes. The rest are hit and miss, sometimes they show up for 40 or 50 minutes but the minutes they shut it down are costly in terms of hurting the overall record.

The team lacks the big "go to" guy this season (Stalberg and Lenes were those guys last year). They have a veteran core of defensemen that had a fair amount of press early but has been underwhelming.

Hockey East and NCAA hopes - Like the WCHA, after this holiday tournament, everything is conference play. This team is much to inconsistent to figure out. Being a veteran based team and having played in the NCAA tourney, one would like to believe these guys would be a team no one would like to face in a playoff environment or in the final 16. Especially if the goalie, Rob Madore, is able to recapture his mojo that he had last season. If he does, then I think this is a top 8 team in the NCAA tourney.

But a lot of hockey remains to be played...

Wish I was going. I would be all over Wahsontiio Stacey. Let's all recall he de-committed from tUMD.

              Hockey! Can not wait!!

Re: Catamount Cup: Vermont, tUMD, Mercyhurst and UAH

I was thisclose to flying into Burlington to see it. Alas.

Cam Talbot has looked like the real deal in net for us this year. Our top line right now is Sebastian Geoffrion [Blake's brother], Andrew Coburn, and Cody Campbell. None of them are physically big but all play like bigger kids.

UAH has had a weird season: great results on the road, terrible results at home despite mostly playing better than we have on the road in our wins. The only games we've been out of were at Bemidji, where they seem to have our goats, and even then, Tom Serratore had good things to say about us.

Re: Catamount Cup: Vermont, tUMD, Mercyhurst and UAH

                      UVM :

Positives : They are 4-1-1 in their last 6 with the lone loss coming to UNH. Team is laden with veteran players and has the experience that one would like to have in a team. They have incredible depth both at forward and defense. The PK and PP has been clicking over the past few games, and they can be as good 5 on 5 as any team in the country. Key players so far have been Brayden Irwin, Wahs Stacey, Justin Milo, Brian Roloff and Chris McCarthy. Rob Madore has been solid in net his last 3 outings and seems to be returning to form from last season.

Negatives : Their play is terribly inconsistent. The veteran core of D-men have been a let down. Outside of the past 3 games the PK and PP has been atrocious and goaltending has been spotty (granted that may have been heavily influenced by the defensive breakdowns that became a regular part of the game.) Key players such as Stacey and Milo have regularly missed games and have been in and out of the line up, leading to a constant juggling of the lines and hampering any chemistry developing.

Possible the biggest negative of this team is they tend to play to the level of their opponent, which has been exacerbated this season especially by the parity in HE. They played well against some very good teams and won, and they have played very poorly against some not so good teams and lost. Their play mirrors the level of competition way too much for my liking.

In part this team and their play will come down to A.) playing the entire 60 minutes and B.) penalties. In the games UVM has won, penalties have been minimal and the offense has been given a chance to find a groove and score. In the losses, there has been a pretty constant parade to and from the penalty box, which in turn has put a lot of pressure on the goalies and kept the offense from ......playing offense.

Season Expectations / Hopes : I think should UVM find a way to be consistent they are a top 4 team in HE and should make the NCAA with possibly a first round win. If they continue to struggle with getting up for a full 60 minutes they are looking at a mid pack HE finish and not getting an NCAA bid.

Re: Catamount Cup: Vermont, tUMD, Mercyhurst and UAH

I don't think you can really say that UVM has played at the level of the competition regularly. They played WAY below the level of the competition in games against Merrimack and Maine.

Yes, team D has had many breakdowns but goaltending has been pretty much horrendous in many of the losses. Goaltending needs to improve and become consistent if they are going to go anywhere.

They need to come out and take UAH seriously and work for 60 minutes. And then if they get the chance to play UMD they will need to work hard and have a little luck. That could be a very good and very BIG game - with tuc considerations at play.

Hopefully UVM puts the inconsistency of the first half behind them and comes out on a mission this weekend to propel them into the second half.

They are capable of getting to the NCAA tournament if they commit themselves to 100% effort, move their feet, and keep the game simple the balance of the RS.

Actually we don't tend to argue with each other. We tend to argue with rednecks and/or Ivy League wannabe's from Mass.

If anyone wants to talk hockey during the tournament. Come over to Section 21 before the game, or between periods. Look for the the GU Jerseys. Should be around to watch some of the non Vermont games as well.
