Provincial championship in Ontario doesn’t happen for another two weeks. The list may change a little after then.

The exchange rate is slightly worse than it was last year. USports continues to grow. Girls/womens programs in the US continue to grow. There were 3 Canadians at the semifinals, all of them playing for Adrian. 8 more if you include the rosters of the earlier rounds (4 on Norwich, 3 on Williams and 1 on UW-RF).

I don't think it's ever going back to what it was like in the aughties when your daughter and many of her fellow Canadians came down and made up significant portions of DIII rosters. I'm hoping the opportunities for Canadian women to play at the collegiate level in Canada increase as the opportunity in the US has been decreasing. But there are more teams now in both countries and certainly there are teams in NCAA DIII with empty roster spots (see Wilkes). I think the exchange rate will have to come back to even for it to ever come back up on the US side.

I agree with you with one exception, I'm hearing from more DIII coaches that maybe the pendulum has swung too far. They are looking to admissions to help them a little more to entice a few more Canadians over the next couple of years. When my daughter committed (she's finishing up her junior year) the going rate for tuition/room/board was between $21-$23k at most schools (thank God she had good marks!). In the last 2 years that has crept up to $25-$27k.

Now coaches are trying to get that back down to $21-$23k. It may not open the floodgates, but if the exchange stays roughly where it is, it may entice a few more Canadian families to consider DIII.

Some of that is certainly trying to find the right price point on cost. Higher education in the US, especially in the Northeast/New England right now is really struggling. There have been at least 10 schools that have already closed or will be closing in 2018-19 due to not being able to stay viable. Now, you shouldn't see that effect too many of the hockey schools since hockey generally is a pretty expensive sport and not something a struggling institution will take on or operate. Daniel Webster being the outlier so far...

In the northeast I know that Mt. Ida, Newbury, Green Mountain and Southern Vermont all closed and Lyndon State and Johnson State merged into Northern Vermont University. Vermont in particular seems to have been hit pretty hard. Any more than that?

                St. Joseph's College (Vermont)
                Burlington College
                Atlantic Union (Boston)
Goddard College and Hampshire College are on life support and could announce any day.

So I guess that only makes nine. Sorry overstepped by one. But it wouldn't surprise if we see another couple announce in the next month. The Mount Ida one came out of no where last year.

But also I was including Lyndon and Johnson kind of combining, so that would effectively make 10.

5 closures and a merger in Vermont. Seems very disproportionate...I loved visiting VT when I was a Plattsburgh student and I am saddened for the state. Hopefully they can stabilize.

They would likely be joining the CHC. One more team to keeping their autobid

I had heard rumblings. Guess that pretty much makes it official.

So based on the AHCA board the current HC openings are Buffalo State, St. Olaf and a 20-21 debuting Western New England. Any others?

EDIT: Also, with the departure of Canton and Morrisville and the presumption that the WNEU joins the Colonial, does the CHC become the Commonwealth Women since every team in the conference is a permanent member of the Commonwealth Coast Conference plus Becker which is an associate of the CCC for Men's Hockey (and Football)?

I’ve seen a few reports that the state of Vermont spends less per student than any other state so the schools are much more tuition driven. If you can’t run a tight ship under those conditions you are in trouble.

In addition to the exchange rate, Canadian universities are now offering scholarships. Personally, if there were scholarships back in the day, my D would have attended Western. I was looking at the education quality; unfortunately, she was looking for a good team. Guess who won! (And it worked out pretty good in the end!)
